Examples in Lord of the Flies
Examples in Lord of the Flies Continued
"'We shall take the fire from the others. Listen. Tomorrow we'll hunt and get meat. Tonight I'll go along with two hunters-who'll come?'" (161 Golding)
In this quote Jack is talking about raiding Piggy and Ralph for Piggy's glasses (control over the fire). This is a prime example of Jack's selfish nature because once he gets the fire from them he doesn't care what happens to them because they can't do anything for him.
Examples From History
"Humanitarianism is the expression of stupidity and cowardice." - Adolf Hitler
Hitler was able to get thousands of people to follow him and his ideals. Humanism is the compassion for other people and Hitler dubbed it as stupid, ultimately saying that it is better to look out for one's self rather than look out for others too.
Examples in Lord of the Flies Continued
"' I should have thought,' said the officer as he visualized the search before him,'
Thank you!

SelfISH or SelfLESS?
By Greta Westfall and Erin Gastrock
Examples From History Continued
"During the 1920s, the rich got richer, and the poor got poorer."
During the Great Depression a large gap was created between the rich and the poor due the uneven distribution of wealth. During this time the rich were only concerned about themselves, and could care less about all of the poverty stricken citizens around them. This shows the true selfishness of human nature because even when everyone around them was suffering they were only concerned about their well being.
We have come to the realization that it is in our nature, as humans, to be selfish. Humans are inherently selfish because when forced to cooperate they will turn on each other, in the past humans have forced others to follow them for personal reasons, and even today humans are hurting each other for unjustifiable reasons.
"'He's going to beat Wilfred.''What for?' Robert shook his head doubtfully. 'I don't know. He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up...'"
In this quote Robert and Roger are discussing Jacks plans for Wilfred. This shows that Jack was intending to beat Wilfred for no reason other than the mere fact that he was angry. He was being selfish by only thinking about his feelings, and not even questioning how Wilfred would feel if he was beaten.
I should have thought that a pack of British boys... would have been able to put up a better show than that'" (Golding 202). The officer has no regard for the emotional trauma the boys have been going through and instead of worrying about the obviously injured boys he talks about his expectations for them selfishly making assumptions on things he knows nothing about.

"The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about 805 million people of the 7.3 billion people in the world, or one in nine, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2012-2014."
This quote is referring to the high number of starving and poverty stricken people in the world. If people were not naturally selfish wouldn't there be no starving people; or at least wouldn't there be less? Many people suffer everyday yet most people only think about themselves and how they can better their own life showing the true selfishness of our nature.
