Defintion from dictionary.com:
fuel, as wood or ethanol, derived from biomass.
- You gain only a little bit of energy from corn ethanol
Biofuel is also known as agrofuel
There are 3 main forms of Biofuels:
- A fear that environmentalists have is that when more biofuel is needed, more habitats for animals and plants will be destroyed because more land will be needed to for the crops of biofuel. In some Asian countries, it is feared that their rainforests will be destroyed to create more oil plantations.
- If farmers grow crops for biofuel instead of food, prices will rise because the less food there is the more the food is in demand. (It is estimated that around 100million people are at risk due to the food price increases, mostly in developing countries)
- It is a renewable energy source
-Easy to use
-Enviromentality cleaner than fossil fuels
-Can be made locally
-Easily mixed with other fuels
-Can be cheaper than fossil fuels
-Release less carbon than gasoline
-Hard to find
-Not widely available
Sugar cane ethanol
Prairie grass ethanol
Biobutanol can be added to gasoline in very high quantities with no bad effects. It can be added with no modification. It also has a higher energy density and lower volatility than ethanol. Biobutanol is closely linked to ethanol oil form. This is still a very new energey source and not widely available
Prairie grass may be a powerful biofuel crop. It doesn't take as much water or fertilizer to grow fast. 1 or 2 crops can be harvested in a year. It also has a huge growing range.
Sugar cane ethanol is used in Brazil. You get 8 units of energy for 1 unit of petroleum feed stock. It has lots of fermentable sugars. The rest of the plant is burned cleanly. Sugar cane ethanol powers the fermenting and distilling, which results in major reduction in carbon emission and lowers the gas cost alot.
Ethanol is made from corn. For every unit you put into the production process you get 1.3 units of ethanol out. Another promising crop is corn stover. All of the by-products of corn ie: stocks, leaves, husks, but it is hard to convert the hard cellulose fibers into sugars using bio engineered enzymes. This could create an energy ratio of 10:1, but it is extremely hard to break down the cellulsoic fibers because they are very dense.
Algae biodiesel is made by filtering pond scum filled water through hanging plastic bags in the sun light which creates algae through photosynthesis. This is called Vertigro. Algae is siphoned off to continuously. Algae oil is the extracted then refined into fuel like biodiesel. 100 000 gallons per acre per year of algae can be produced. Compared to corn which produce 20-30 gallons per acre.
Biodiesel is a new alternative to using fossil fuels. It is a renewable, clean-burning, diesel alternative., which is decreasing the carbon emissions and our dependance on diesel in Canada. It is made from a variety of different things including, agricultural oils, recycled cooking oil, and animal fats, that would have been wasted otherwise.
Many countries are and have been using biofuels for many years. Some of them are Canada, Brazil, United States, Australia, China, India, Thailand , and most European countries. Like said earlier Brazil is the leading producer of sugarcane ethanol, and the United States also contributes a lot to the production of biofuels.
