The Space Race The Space Race between The United States and Russia began in the 1950s and went through the 1960s. It was a race for dominance of outer space. Soviets Begin! On November
3, 1957
the USSR
sent the
first dog into
orbit on the Sputnik 2. To keep up, America starts NASA. In April, 1961 the
Soviets launch Yuri
Gargarin, the first human, into space. In May, 1961 The United States sent Alan Sheppard into space. Later that year, President
John F. Kennedy promises
to have a man on the moon
withen the decade's end. In 1963 the Russians sent the first woman into space, Valentina Tereshkova. In 1965 the Russians
completed the first
space walk. The Soviets plan trips to
the moon, but have too
many design flaws. On July 20, 1969 the
Americans successfully
landed men on the moon. The men travelled on Apollo 11.
They were Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong,
and Michael Collins. Armstrong Collins Aldrin No Soviets ever walk on the moon, and America wins...
