Fracture occurs along the 5th metatarsal. The typical method of injury is landing from a jump on an inverted foot.
The dancer will experience immediate pain and swelling. He/She may or may not be able to walk.
Treatment: Ice, Elevation, and limiting weight bearing activities. 6 weeks for adequate bone healing. Requires a period of immobilization while injury heals. Rehabilitation should follow the rebuild foot and ankle mobility.
Recommendations for prevention: Foot wraps( self-adhering wrap, NOT metal clip wraps which may irritate foot) which supports bones and muscles while dancing.
Properly fitting dance shoes should hold foot snugly. Wear dance shoes that enclose the sides of your feet to protect the area prone to Dancer's Fracture. sesamoiditis Diagnosis: Tendon that runs between the sesamoids becomes inflamed.
A form of tendinitis.
Pain focused under the big toe on the ball of the foot & pain begins with mild ache then increases gradually.
Pain while bending and straightening the big toe.
May take several months for pain to be completely healed.
Treatment: Rest foot so inflammation and pain is decreased. Ice 10-15 minutes after activity in the area. Taping of big toe so it is slightly downward(plantar flexion) relieves pressure. Women should wear flat shoes on a daily basis.

Hallux Valgus If you have a bony
foot, there may not be enough fat on your foot to protect the sesamoids! did you know? "I have pain underneath my big toe, particularly while walking without shoes." "I landed badly from a jump and now it hurts to walk." Diagnosis: Medial movement of the first metatarsal head, where a bunion bump gradually forms.

Pain when jumping or weight bearing activities. (even slight contact causes exquisite pain.
Treatment Models: If caught early, can be treated by straightening exercises stretching or orthotic prescription. Toe spacers between first and second toe can help with alignment. If bunion gets irritated by painful wearing shoes, surgery may be need.
Recommendations for Prevention: Avoid excessive pronation "My big toe points inward and is painful." -Pointe shoes contribute to bunion development. (1) Dancer's who overpronate on flat often "wing" on pointe. (2) If pointe shoes don't fit properly ,(ex. toe box is too tapered or narrow, toes squeeze together), there is even MORE pressure on the big toe joint.
-High heels, pointed shoes, and unsupportive shoes can all contribute to overpronation! did you know? did you know? Stepping on a partner's foot is one of the most common causes of dancer's fracture.
