Pinckney Treaty 1795

Established intentions of friendship between the United States and Spain. It also defined the boundaries of the United States with the Spanish colonies and guaranteed the United States navigation rights on the Mississippi River.

1795 Background Cause http://www.qwiki.com/q/Thomas_Pinckney Explanation Pinckney's Treaty Spain recognized the need to clarify borders in the United States. Prior to the treaty, the western and southern borders of the United States had been a source of tension between Spain and the United States. Both Spain and the United States owned parts of the Mississippi River. Spain wanted to keep American trade and frontier settlement to a minimum. Thomas Pinckney Spain controlled a crucial part of the southern part of the Mississippi River the restricted our trade Spain and the United States agreed on the boundary of the United States with the Spanish Colonies. We got full control of the Mississippi River Impact Pinckney's Treaty gave the United States control of the Mississippi River which in return improved our trading abilities because they gained the ability to trade out of the Gulf of Mexico The settlers were able to move more westward after we gained control of the Mississippi. What would have happened if the Pinckney's Treaty never occured? How did the treaty affect westward expansion?
