Transcript of The Body Systems

Skeletal System Functions:
1.Supports body structures and provides shape to the body.
2.Protects the soft and delicate internal organs.
3.It allows movement of muscles.
4.Provides mineral storage.
5.It is the site for hemopoiesis.(Blood cell formation) Bone Types:

Long Bones: Ex.Femur
Flat Bones: Ex.Ribs
Short Bones: Ex.Ankle
Irregular Bones: Ex.Spinal column Parts of the Skletal System:

Axial Skeleton-
Skull, spinal column, ribs, & sternum
Appendicular Skeleton-
includes upper extremities: shoulder girdles, arms, wrists, and hands; &lower extremities: hip girdle, legs, ankles, & feet. 206 BOnes!!! Circulatory System 2 Major circulatory systems:
Cardiopulmonary- blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart.
Systematic- blood from the heart to the tissues and cells and back to the heart The Aorta is the largest artery in t he body!!! Arteries: carry oxygenated blood away from
the heart.
Veins: carry deoxygenated blood away from the capillaries to the heart.
Capillaries: are the smallest blood vessels & can only be seen through a compund microscope. Where can I take my pulse?? Respiratory System Functions:
1.Provides the structures for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body.
2.Responsible for the production of sound, the larynx contains the vocal cords. Respiration is the physical and chemical processes by which the body supplies its cells and tissues w/ oxygen. External respiration: a.k.a breathing
Internal respiration: exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen between the cells and the lymph surrounding them. The lungs are the main organs in the system! Muscular System 3 main responsibilties:
1.Body movement
2.Body form and shape, to maintain posture
3.Body heat, to maintain body temp. 3 main types:
cardiac Names:
Deltoid- upper arm(injection site)
Gluteus maximus- buttocks
Diaphragm-raises the ribs to help in breathing Reproductive System
1.Creation of a new individual
2.Manufacture hormones necessary for the development of the reproductive organs and secondary sex characteristics.
-Females- estrogen&progesterone
-Males-testosterone Fertilization Infant
