Transcript of Pros and cons of altering the human genome

what is genome testing?
Genetic (Genome) testing is a type of medical test that identifies changes in chromosomes, genes, or proteins. (DNA)
Who is it being tested on?
Scientists have only done the testing on human fetus's
Doing the testing on grown adults could potentially kill them
It could also create new, and potentially fatal diseases.
how is it possible?
what can changing the genome do ?
Changing the genome can potentially cure diseases such as
Tay-Sachs
Sickle Cell Anemia

Pros and cons of altering the human genome

ZNFs,TALENs, and CRISPR are computer programs that are used to alter the genomes

Caplan, Arthur. "Chinese Scientists Try To Alter Genomes In Human Embryos." Forbes. Forbes Magazine, 24 Apr. 2015. Web. 07 May 2015.
I learned that China is already trying to alter genes by using a new program called CRISPR.

"Controversial 1st: Scientists Edit DNA In Human Embryo, Raising Concerns Over Genome Changes." CBS San Francisco. CBS Local Media, a Division of CBS Radio Inc, 24 Apr. 2015. Web. 05 May 2015. I learned that even with the risks of genome testing, if someone is selecting traits for you, then you could potentially become perfect.

Laskin, Heather. "Chinese Scientists Announce They Have Modified The Human Genome." Western Journalism. Western Journalsim, 24 Apr. 2015. Web. 05 May 2015. I learned that the scientists have to alter the genome even though it has been proven that it could bring up diseases of its own.

Vincent, James. "Scientists in China Edit Human Genome in Embryos for the First Time." The Verge. Vox Media, Inc., 23 Apr. 2015. Web. 05 May 2015. I learned that CRISPR (a computer program) is planning to change the genome so it can cure a fatal blood disease, that is taking the lives of young children.

Yeadon, Jim. "Pros and Cons of ZNFs,TALENs, and CRISPR/Cas | MouseClique." MouseClique. THE JACKSON LABORATORY, 03 Mar. 2014. Web. 05 May 2015. I learned that new programs can help change the human genome in more than one ways. Such as the curing of some fatal genetic diseases.

Pros
Could cure fatal diseases
Find and improve current research
Could change your risk of getting any genetic diseases
cons
Could cause parents to choose traits for there children, which is called
designer babies
Could kill people while testing
Could create new and possibly fatal diseases
