Academic success is an outcome most parents and schools prioritise and strive to attain for their children.
This presentation outlines different sporting activities undertaken by school students in Fiji
The number of sports undertaken may positively affect academic performance
It also summarizes way in which sports hinders academic performance
Briefly discusses a case study conducted in USA Middle school in 2008 - 2009 Fiji is well known for their skills in Rugby, this is played from the grassroots level in primary and secondary school and also in tertiary institutions
Volley ball is another game played in academic institutions mostly in secondary and at the tertiary level
Soccer is played in almost all academic institutions
Baseball and cricket have been introduced into primary and secondary schools
Hockey is a growing sport which is also played by most academic institutions
Other sports activities like Judo, Hapkido, Track and Field events etc are also present Increased time in PE classes can help children's attention and concentration and achievement test scores
Taking part in physical activities help prevent obesity which is often a major cause of laziness
Helps improve blood circulation around the body thus increasing a students capacity for paying attention
Increased brain neurotransmitters
Drop-out rates are often lower for youth who consistently participate in interscholastic sports
Taking part in day-to-day physical activities improves muscle coordination and improved concentration Figure 3 shows the Grade Point Average, Attendance and Behavior Referral numbers for students taking multiple sports activites
- It can be noticed that students who have a balanced number of sports of 2 have a higher school attendance rating than those taking just 1 or 3
- It can be concluded that students who take up more sports are less prone to behavior problems Figure 4 shows the average Grade Point Averages of students taking up multiple sports.
-Upon analyzing the graph it can be concluded that students who take up more than a single sport have a slightly higher GPA Average than those taking just one sport When is academic performance hindered by sports? - Academic performance may be hindered by sports in that students may not concentrate in classes due to extreme losses of energy on the sporting field
- Students are more interested in playing outside than studying
- If a student is injured through sports he/she may not be able to attend school
- The pressures of upcoming tournaments or events may put a student out of balance in that more focus would be on sports rather than in the classroom
- If a student develops no real goal or aspirations in life but would rather focus on sports

- Upon analyzing the graph it is clear that students who are athletes have a higher GPA Average than non-athletes.
- It is also noticable that athletes have lesser attendance rating than non-athletes.
- Both athletes and non athletes appear to have the same average number of behavior referrals Figure 2 shows the Grade Point Average of athletes and Non-Athletes
- It can be concluded that athletes have a higher GPA than non athletes - Taking up more than a single sport could help boost academic performance
- Sports does have a positive effect on academic performance
- Students who take up more than one sport are less prone to behavioral problems in school
- Too much focus or concentration on sports could hinder academic performance
- Sporting activities can be used as an academic booster in all levels of academic institutions
