ENGEL Vs. VITALE Separation of church
and the State. what year did it take place?
Late 1950's where?
New Hyde park , New York Background:
every morning when walking
in to class as you scramble
for a seat and after morning
announcements you were asked
(NOT FORCED) to rise bow
your head and recite the twenty
two word prayer...
"Almighty God, we acknowledge our
dependence upon thee, and we beg Thy
blessings upon us, our parents
our teachers, and our country." The main reason why this case made it to the
supreme court was because parents were upset
saying that administrators should
not be applying religion in school. All parents argued that school prayer the First Amendement of the constitution, this Amendment prohibits the government from passing laws establishing a religion. And the prayer itself was contrary to different and particular religious beliefs and practices at home. School board defended them selfs by.... saying.. that the prayer was not a religious instruction, that also it is a voluntary process, no one was forced to say it.. they also said that in the Declaration of Independence spoke about God and that the country needs his blessings... also.. that American coins have
" In God we trust " so if our
money can talk about God why
can't we say a simple prayer? Final decision: Justices announced that they had voted 6 to 1 in favor of banning the prayer from schools. This does not directly affect us or me either because i like to say my own prayer to God but it would be nice if we could have a place where we could come into the presence of God without bothering anyone who is not comfortable with Christians and their beliefs. blablaa
