In 1497, King Manuel I of Portugal asked Vasco da Gama to find a sea route to India. He left Lisbon, Portugal on July 8th, 1497 with a fleet of 4 ships: the Berrio, the St. Gabriel, the St. Raphael and a supply ship. He sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and on May 20th, 1498 reached Kozhikode, India. Gama arrived back in Lisbon in September 1499. Only 55 survived the voyage back. Vasco da Gama's voyage opened the first all water trade route between Europe and India. Vasco da Gama sailed to India twice more in his lifetime before he died of illness on December 24th, 1524 in India. His father was also an explorer. Vasco studied astronomy and navigation in school.
