Why is blank verse so common in English?

Well, a lot of people think we speak in blank verse in our everyday conversations. Kind of like we just did: "a lot of people think we speak in it." That could also be a blank verse line.
History of the Blank Verse
This verse was common in Renaissance dramas by Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, both of whom made the verse accomplish all kinds of amazing fancy feats!

Why would some poets find writing Free Verse poetry to be liberating?

Some poets feel that it is because they are able to whimsically change their mind, while others feel like they could not do a good job in that manner.
Free Verse
Written
without
following a normal meter, of rhythm. However, Free Verse poems can be written following a rhythm using sounds, words or sentences. It really depends on the author’s preference. Out of all the poetic forms, free verse tends to sound the most like normal speech.
Famous Poet, Robert Frost, even commented saying that writing free verse was like "playing tennis without a net."
After the Sea-Ship by Walt Whitman

After the Sea-Ship—after the whistling winds;
After the white-gray sails, taut to their spars and ropes,
Below, a myriad, myriad waves, hastening, lifting up their necks,
Tending in ceaseless flow toward the track of the ship.

Fog by Carl Sandburg

The fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

I moved down the hall,
retracing conversation
in my head
as I
shuffled back toward bed.
Your picture, still there, made it worse.
Your smile
brought forth
my tears.

Blank Verse:
I walked along the hallway to my room,
and thought of all the careless things I'd said.
I paused to touch the photo on the wall.
Your smile just made me start to cry again.
