If it was for old, limited technology, why is it still around today?
What is pixel art?
What is it used for?
How is it created?
Pixel art is a form of digital art and a type of art movement that consists of showing art through the use of pixels on digital devices.
It is often associated with 8-bit computers and video game art from the 1980s and early 1990s.
Pixel art's main use is in video games
But it is also used for
Pixel art is a form of digital art so it is made with the use of digital software like Photoshop or paint.
Pixel art is edited on a pixel level and is made with the help of bitmaps.
A quick history Timeline of pixel art
Pixel art was first defined and demonstrated by the game designers of the late 70's/ early 80's, When video games had first started to become popular in the entertainment industries.
But back then pixel art was still very crude and unevolved.
Late 70's early 80's
In the 90's Video games had become a lot more advanced and complex and so had it's art. Pixel art was more colorful and more complex, the visuals had become a lot more easier to understand.
But as video game art evolved with technology Pixel art was used a lot less often as it was seen as old fashion and clunky.
Pixel art was later brought back mainly because of indie game developers who wanted to bring back the old retro gaming art style to their own games. This is what really brought the art style/movement to life
Can you think of any art from the olden days that reminds you of pixel art?
The start of Pixel art
Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image.
This is similar to Pixel art as they both have many small colored "shapes" to form an image.
Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. It is a technique of decorative art or interior decoration. Most mosaics are made of small, flat, roughly square, pieces of stone or glass of different colors, known as tesserae; but some, especially floor mosaics, may also be made of small rounded pieces of stone, and called "pebble mosaics". It was first discovered from the roman period.
This is similar to pixel art as it also involves using small colored square to form an image.
Mainly to bring back nostalgia feelings to those who played video games back in the 80's and 90's but it is also seen as a great art style. People like it because it can be easy or hard to create depending on how complex you want the art to be and for as small as pixels are, there are countless styles you can work in: overhead RPGs like Chrono Trigger, more realistic Street Fighter, cartoony Super Mario World.. practically every game made had its own style. You can even make your own. You can also make some really nice looping animations with pixel art.
