Tragedy
- The imitation in dramatic form of an action that is serious and complete, with incidents arousing pity and fear wherewith it effects a
catharsis
of such emotions.

Catharsis- the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions.
Characteristics of Tragedy
Chief characters are noble and perform noble actions
The plot involves change in the protagonist's fortune
usually falls from happiness to misery
Protagonist not perfect, but not a bad person
failure is not due to character flaw
misfortunes are a result of
hamartia

HAMARTIA - a mistake or error in judgement;
a criminal act commited in ignorance of some fact or for the sake of a greater good
Reversal and Discovery
The best tragic plots involve a reversal, a discovery, or both.

REVERSAL-A change from one state of things within the play to its opposite

DISCOVERY- a change from ignorance to knowledge

Archetype
A very typical example of character, an action, or situation that seems to represent common patterns of human life
Often, archetypes include a symbol, a theme, a setting, or a character that some critics think have a common meaning in an entire culture, or even the entire human race
These images have particular emotional resonance and power
Archetypes recur in different times and places
Archetype of the Tragic Hero
1. Man of
noble stature
/not ordinary/usually prince or king
2. Good, though not perfect, his fall results of
hamartia
He may have a
tragic flaw
- some fault of character (quick to anger, jealousy, pride)
3. Hero's downfall is his own fault, the result of his own
free choice
, not the result of accident or villainy or fate.
4. The hero's misfortune is not wholly deserved;
the punishment exceeds the crime,
his fall fills us with pity and fear
5. Though the fall may result in death, the protagonist gains some
discovery
-insight, increased awareness, or knowledge about something
6. Does not leave audience in a state of depression but proves to be a
cathartic experience
