If you were arguing your case with a parent, you
might use informal language. However, if you were
writing a letter arguing a case to someone you did
not know, you should choose formal language. In
order to win your argument, it is important to
choose the level of formality suitable to your audience. Starter Activity Sentence types - Join the simple sentences below to form a selection of compound sentences:
Joe went to the library.
Joe went to the shops.
He bought some sweets, pop and a magazine.
Joe went to the park to meet his friends.
Harry wanted him to play football.
Joe wanted to eat his sweets.

1. Use a variety of sentences, for example, simple, compound and complex sentences.
2. (Now write at least one more of your own) Your Task: Look at the texts below. Draw a table in your books
with the headings, Formal and Informal. Write the text under the heading you think it belongs.
A. An emailed job application.
B. A text message to your sister.
C. An information leaflet about bank charges.
D. A written note left at home for a member of your family.
E. A leeter to the local newspaper.
F. An article about computer games in a magazine for teenage girls.
Once you have done this, continue working in the table you have drawn and write the following features of formal and informal language under the heading you think it best fits.

6. Short, simple sentences Task 2 You have recently had a lot of building work carried out at your house. You are extremely unhappy with the builders and need to write a formal letter arguing that they should reduce their price. Look at the sentences on the handout and choose three that you think would be appropriate in your formal letter and explain why.
Once you have done this, write the formal letter arguing that the builders should reduce their price. You must write the letter in your own words but include the three sentences that you have chosen in your letter. Review Swap your letter with the person sat next to you. Read their letter. Using the Level descriptors on your handout, level your partners work. You must say what they have done to achieve this level and suggest one thing they could do to gain the level above.
When you get your work back, read the comments that have been made.
Look again at your success criteria. Have you achieved the things that you set for yourself at the beginning of the lesson. If so, how have you done this? If not, what will you do next time to ensure you are successful?
