Transcript of About Christine Simmonds-Moore

Welcome to the psychology of Mind and Body! Before we begin, I would like to introduce myself
Who am I (and where am I)?

Hello - my name is Dr. Christine Simmonds-Moore. My office can be located upstairs in Melson hall (room 215). My email address is csimmond@westga.edu and my phone number is 678-839-5334.
What do I study?

I am very interested in "exceptional experiences". These include paranormal experiences, beliefs in those experiences, altered states of consciousness, transpersonal experiences. I am particularly interested in the personality correlates of these experiences and understanding more about healthy versus less healthy experiences. We we explore some of these topics during Mind and body
One of my recent studies focused on
Synesthesia, and how this relates to exceptional experiences (including whether synesthetes are more psychic than non synesthetes!). We will discuss synesthesia in this class.

My family
I came to work at the University of West Georgia in the fall of 2011. I live in Carrollton with my husband (who teaches physics and math at West Georgia Technical college) and my two children (Sienna, 10 and Leif, 6)
I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you over the semester
I am from the UK
I am originally from the UK ( a small village called Chipperfield), but moved to the USA in 2009 (I am married to an American and originally came to the USA to work at the Rhine Research Center in Durham, North Carolina - the successor to the Duke University Parapsychology Laboratory - see www.rhine.org).
this is just around the corner from my parents' house
I am the author of 2 books on these topics
About me
I love traveling, music, reading, psychology (particularly the psychology of "exceptional experiences - more on that later!), art, and spending time with my family. Last year, I spent the summer in my native UK where I taught a class on the psychology of ghosts (in London). I returned to the UK in September to present a paper at a Transpersonal Psychology conference. I will be teaching in Scotland as part of the EC study abroad program this summer!
Grant-funded research projects
I have recently completed a research project (with Dr. Rice) which explored the experiences people have whilst wearing a specially designed (placebo) head device whilst relaxing in a "faraday" chamber. This study was just published, so we are very excited! We will think about the God helmet and placebo effects as part of the mind body course this semester.
We are currently getting ready to start a new funded research project on GHOSTS!
Please read through the syllabus and purchase a copy of the text book as soon as you are able to do so (it is available in the UWG book shop and online). If you have any questions, please email me via my CourseDen email. You should also think about joining the facebook group I have set up for this class (you will find the link via courseden and in the syllabus).
