It is essential that you know how to multiply and divide by powers of 10. This is a crucial idea in writing a number in standard form, a common skill required in science.
Steps Into Numeracy Mind Map

A good place to start to gain confidence in your numeracy is with the multiplication of small numbers (less that 10). You should try to develop strategies to multiply together small numbers and remember your times tables.
Division is the most challenging of the four fundamental mathematical operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing). However there are tips and tricks which can help you with division of whole numbers
Being able to multiply without a calculator forms a central part of numeracy and is one of four essential operations in mathematics.
There is a grid method which is used to multiply together both whole and decimal numbers.
Learning what Prime Factors are and how to write a composite number in prime factor form are extremely useful skills to have. Prime Factors play an important role in canceling down fractions, and finding both Highest Common Factors and Lowest Common Multiples.
BODMAS
BODMAS is an acronym which helps you to remember the order in which mathematical calculations are carried out. It stands for Brackets, Order, Divide, Multiply, Add, Subtract.
Many misunderstandings regarding fractions come from a lack of knowledge of the words and definitions surrounding them. It is good for you to familiarise yourself with the different kinds of fractions you may come across and the language used to describe them.
Basic operations on fractions, such as multiplying and dividing, are commonly misunderstood. Mastering them is essential in becoming numerate and will also improve your algebra.
The process of canceling down a fraction is fundamental in mathematics as it is one of the basic methods for simplification. You will come across it in most areas of mathematics and having a good process for canceling down a fraction will help strengthen your mathematics.
It is useful to know about the different kinds of numbers you may come across in your studies. This guide gives a brief history of the development of numbers and highlights the way that modern mathematicians categories numbers.
The Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) between two or more numbers is the smallest number which has all those numbers as factors. The LCM plays an important role in adding and subtracting fractions.
The highest common factor (HCF) of two or more numbers is an important concept in mathematics. The HCF is the largest number that exactly divides into the numbers in question and plays a crucial role in canceling down fractions.
