UNDERSTANDING VEGANISM Ethics Is the commodification and exploitation of non-human animals an important modern issue? If so, to what extent does adopting a vegan lifestyle offer a sustainable, long-term solution to that issue? Environment Health What is Veganism? A VEGAN Just to clear up any confusion... does not partake in the commodification of non-human animals under any circumstances. That means... no meat, dairy, eggs, honey, gelatin, leather, wool, down, or any other animal product you can think of. A VEGETARIAN does not eat meat, but will eat dairy, eggs, and in some cases purchase other animal products. A PESCATARIAN limits their intake of meat by only eating fish, and abstaining from poultry, beef, pork, and the flesh of any other land animals. Leah Lenenman poses that the crux of the vegan argument comes from a genuine rejection of cruelty to non-human animals. So how are animals abused? Most of the meat consumed by Americans comes from factory farms.

No federal laws in place that regulate treatment of farm animals
All states have cruelty statutes but most common farming practices are exempt Americans today eat as much chicken in one day as they did in one year in 1930.
