Transcript of Anorexia

By: Michaela Hill
Anorexia is a serious eating disorder that is mainly present in women.
People suffering with anorexia believe that in order to be attractive, they have to be extremely thin. They also have a fear of gaining any weight.
Self induced vomiting, excessive use of laxatives, and self starvation are just some methods anorexia sufferers use to stay thin.
This disorder can cause several problems ranging from mental issues, to health scares, and even death.
My position
I feel that thin celebrities and models contribute a lot to anorexia
They affect the minds of young women, making them believe that their normal weight is too fat.

Lack of necessary nutrients to survive can be a result of anorexia.

Celebrities and models influence women to lose weight constantly. Society and Social Media play a huge role in contributing to this crucial disorder.

Have you noticed the winners from "America's Next Top Model" or models from "Project Runway"? How about Miss America pageant winners?
All of these women promote extremely slender bodies, and they are becoming slimmer and slimmer each year
Another icon contributing to anorexia is the famous "Barbie". These dolls are considered perfect. The "Barbie" is very thin, showing that in order to be "perfect" you have to be as thin as the doll.
Have you ever heard of a pro-ana website? These websites gives young women with anorexia, tips on how to hide weight loss, induce vomiting, and deal with side effects of anorexia.
Social media plays a huge role in contributing to anorexia as well.
A 2011 study at the University of Haifa found that adolescent girls that spend a lot of their time on Facebook, have an increased chance at developing an eating disorder such as anorexia.
Counter Arguments
Other researchers feel that people with anorexia don't have it because of celebrities, but because they are unhappy with themselves.

If this is the case, why have pro-ana websites been formed to give tips on being anorexic?

Why have women become anorexic because of what they witness on television?
Also, researchers say that dieting can be dangerous for some people because there can be a reduction in necessary nutrients, which alters gene expression.

Well if this alters gene expression, doesn't that mean that the genes were NOT already altered? This shows that anorexia isn't inherited or natural.
Current News
Every year more than 500,000 people visit pro-ana websites. This number is steadily increasing.

There are ways to reduce the number of people exposed to these ridiculous websites. One possible choice is to block these sites from being viewed. Or, these sites could be prevented from being put on the internet.

Celebrities such as Lady Gaga,Kelly Clarkson, Snooki, Angelina Jolie, and Ashlee Simpson have all admitted that they have suffered with eating disorders during their career.

After Kesha's newly released song, Timber, she was checked into a rehab facility to battle her eating disorder.

What do you notice about these women?
Side effects of anorexia
Celebrities play a huge role in anorexic women. They promote remarkably thin bodies as being ideal for attractiveness.

There are ways to decrease anorexia rates such as:
-blocking pro-ana websites
-therapy/rehab for those who have anorexia
-diversity of models on T.V. shows
America's Next Top Model
Project Runway
Project Runway
According to the graph, about five percent of Americans have been diagnosed with anorexia.
Society has affected the minds of young women, causing them to believe they are unattractive because of their normal weight. Everyday, anorexia sufferers are exposed to the extreme behaviors of celebrities. They promote that being thin is ideal for a woman, and that their normal weight is not good enough.
-Females can become models
- Women are more confident about themselves
- Makes women feel accomplished with weight loss
-Develop serious health problems that can be fatal.
-Decreases level of self esteem
-Constantly under the pressure of having to lose weight
Essential Question
Does society's promotion of a thin body as the ideal female form contribute to anorexia?
