Transcript of Copy of Characteristics of Life

Biotic = Alive
1: Ingest
All organisms INGEST,
they TAKE IN nutrients
2: Digest
After organisms ingest they DIGEST, they BREAK DOWN their food for the nutrients
3: Excrete
After organisms get the nutrients they need they EXCRETE waste as a
SOLID, LIQUID, OR GAS.
4: Growth and Repair
Organisms GROW, they get BIGGER
5: Reproduce
Organisms REPRODUCE, they pass on their DNA
to OFFSPRING
There are 7 Characteristics
of a Living Thing
6: Maintain Homeostasis by Responding to Stimuli
7: Made of Cell(s)
Organisms are either made of a single cell: a unicellular organisms
A unicellular organism (single-celled), ingesting other organisms.
This snake is digesting it's food
When we EXhale we are EXcreteing carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas
Organisms DEVELOP, become more COMPLEX
Organisms REPAIR, they FIX themselves
Other organisms reproduce ASEXUALLY (1 organism passing on DNA, offspring is identical)
Bacteria: Asexual
Some organisms reproduce SEXUALLY: 2 organisms pass on half their DNA to offspring.
Organisms
RESPOND
to
external
&
internal

stimulus
(outide)
(inside)
(event that
causes reaction)
Normal eye
pupil size
External
Stimuli
(light)
Response
: pupil gets smaller so too much light doesn't get it
Response:
you eat!
Internal
Stimuli
(Stomach empty,
need energy,
feel hungry)
Organisms
RESPOND
to
STIMULI
in order to
MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS
.
(adjusting internal conditions to balance health)

Response: you sweat to cool off
You are now maintaining
Homeostasis.
