Explain how ONE element of the cartoon expresses the point of view you identified in Part A.
Part C: Response
The "Black Codes" supported the point of view expressed in the cartoon. "Black codes" were put in to restrict African Americans' freedom, and compel them to work in a labor economy based on low wages or debt. In the political cartoon the African American depicted after the Civil War is being wrongfully punished.
Using the cartoon, answer a, b, and c. The left side shows a scene from before the Emancipation Proclamation. The Right side shows a scene from after the Civil War.
Part A :Response
The Civil Rights Act of 1866: the act proclaimed "that all persons born in the United States ... are hereby declared to be citizens of the United States."
The picture clearly does not depict this idea. Though the form of punishment changed in result to slaves being freed due to the Emancipation proclamation, African Americans that were citizens of the United States did not receive equal rights and were not protected under the law.
One element in the "Slavery is Dead" political cartoon that shows the point of view of the Civil Rights Act of 1866 being wrongfully used is how on the left is a picture of a slave being sold as a punishment and on the right is a picture of an African American being whipped as a punishment for a crime. Though slavery is dead because of the Emancipation Proclamation and cruelty against African Americans still exist.
Briefly explain ONE development in the period of the 180s that challenged or supported the point of view expressed in the cartoon.
