RIM and the Blackberry Brief History Rim was founded in 1984 by two engineering students by the name of Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin. When they first began they stated the business out on the transmission of wireless data and also setting up wireless customer terminals. This made them the first wireless data technology developer in both Canada and North American. Works cited http://www.cbc.ca/news/interactives/timeline-rim/

http://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/missions/expedition34-35/Default.asp How it Shaped Canada's Identity In the name of technological ingenuity it put Canada on the map with the invention of the blackberry. This company was created by two Canadian students from a Canadian University creating the very first transportable emailing device. This shows other countries that Canada is a technological competitor. Today RIM has about 16, 500 employees working at the company. But just last year on August 13 2012 Rim laid off as many as 3000 employees because of their few North- American, company owned store closures. Leaving many Waterloo, Canadian workers jobless. This shows that technology like the blackberry can affect a company's nation quickly. The blackberry is usually associated with it being Canada's technology and innovation. Everyday we export many new Blackberry's across the world to many different countries. 1984 Canadarm 1975 Brief History Pictures Work Cited The first Canadarm was sent into space on November 13, 1981 but five of them were first built in April that year. Canadarm is really the shuttles remote manipulator system which is used to help repair satellites in space. They are fifteen meters long and operate like a hand with six different joints across it. The Canadarm was taken out of space after its 90th mission which took place from July 8th to 21st 2011. This was then soon replaced with a Canadarm 2 because it was smarter and longer. http://www.google.ca/search?gs_rn=14&gs_ri=psy-ab&cp=7&gs_id=p&xhr=t&q=canadarm&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47008514,d.aWc&biw=1280&bih=611&wrapid=tljp1369580949774012&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=giWiUa7vELOHyQGjn4DABg#facrc=_&imgrc=ez1bRiyBOW40lM%3A%3BHm3Bhy8BbySezM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.edmontonjournal.com%252Fnews%252Fnational%252Fcms%252Fbinary%252F7106734.jpg%253Fsize%253D620x400s%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.edmontonjournal.com%252Fnews%252Fnational%252FPhotos%252BCanadarm%252Bdisplay%252Bunveiled%252BCanadian%252BAviation%252BSpace%252F8329513%252Fstory.html%3B620%3B400

The development program for the arm cost around 110 million dollars which shows how hard and how much money them put into this robotic arm for both themselves and NASA. The Canadarm is most likely the most famous and important technology achievement in robots because of the high tech arm that is capable of many jobs and was used many times in space. This technological achievement brought international credit to Canada for inventions of this robots capabilities. its performance in space provided other countries with new technology and support in google imaging, maps, and also internet. This Canadian robot also led to new inventions and advancements in space, for example the Canadarm two, a smarter and longer version to perform better jobs. This technology can help shape any country's or nation's identity by its new and originality in the innovations in robots. This helped alter Canada's identity by showing other country's our ability to assist them with new automation. "Canadians are immensely proud of the Canadarm which was absolutely critical to the Space Shuttle Program and positioned Canada as a key partner in the International Space Station." The device is also known as a two way radio transceiver which was first created for the second war to send messages quicker across the country. Later on the walkie talkie was improved and modernized for other services like police officers, medical vehicles and other public services. Relevance to a Nations Identity Before the Walkie Talkie, it would often take weeks at a time before a message would be able to get to where they wanted it to be during the second world war. This advancement in technology allowed the access in portable communication during the war. Making this communication possible was a positive contribution from Canada's military and was then quickly spread through to other countries. This would show other country's Canada's ingenuity and improvement in the war efforts to create world peace. This helped shape Canada's identity by Canada having the first portable communication technology and use it in the war. This Canadian invention is still used today as an extremely important communication tool for emergency and transportation services all around the world. Which would display to other country's that a Canadian invention is still used today for such important jobs. Significance to Canada's and any Nations Identity The Canadarm is one of Canada's most famous robotics in their advancement in technology. This robotic arm cost Canada over 110 million dollars which shows other country's that Canada put a lot of money and effort into this robot showing other country's that Canada has dedication in their work and innovation. The creation of this robotic arm is a prime example of Canada's innovation in all technology. Since the arm fixed many different satellites around the globe, it gave other country's the opportunity to better maps and imaging world wide and it is all thanks to Canada giving us Canadians national pride for our country because we were able to help different country's around the world. The invention of this creative robotic arm also motivated other scientists and engineers in the field of robotics just like how they created a new and smarter Canadarm not long after it was created. The Canadarm is significant to Canada's identity because it displays to other countrys that Canada has the knowledge to proceed in many things like robotics and engineering by helping out with NASA and creating the Canadarm. All pictures are from google images Chris Hadfield 1959 Brief History Chris Hadfield was born on August 29, 1959 in Sarnia Ontario, Canada. Before he worked as a CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut, Hadfield worked as a Fighter Pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Forces. Among the time being part of the CSA, Hadfield was a Capsule Communicator in two major space missions one in 1995 and the next in 2001. Connection to Canada`s Identity Chris Hadfield is related to technology and this presentation because since he flew in space and has dealt with air craft technology like fighter planes from the war and rocket ships in space he is very intelligent when it comes to aircraft technology. Another point that proves he has a connection with technology is that when he was in the space ships he was the capsule communicator which means he communicates with the crew members and people back on earth so he also dealt with many of the communication technology on the space craft. When Chris went onto the Soyuz aircraft he made Canadian history on May 13 2012. He did this by becoming the first Canadian Commander of the ISS (International Space Station). This historical event is significant to Canada`s Identity because it gives Canada credibility with this achevement and shows other countries that Canada has the know- how to do hard and unthinkable events. 1937 1959 1975 1984 Technology Time Line By Randy Borghese I believe that the most significant criterion necessary for the establishment of a nations identity is technology.
