http://www.flickr.com/photos/bathintime/sets/72157601312881509/ What is digital curation? Wow, that looks scary ...
... and complicated. The Digital Curation Centre define's Digital curation as "the selection, preservation, maintenance, collection and archiving of digital assets". Hmm.... that sounds kind of familiar? Well. you are a Librarian! You already do some, maybe even all of these things, just in a different context. You just have to break it down into digestible ‘chunks’... Researchers create data, the data curator helps them start off on the right foot planning their data management. Create Process Going to need some tools for that! You want to make sure that data is any good in the first place, check, validate, clean
and anonymise. Analyse What you don't want, and what you do want, acquisition or appraisal let's say. And where is that copyright at? Preservation Formats, standards, platforms, storage media. Not to mention the side of metadata with that so you know what and where the heck the data is and so you can find it again. Access Don't forget those users as distribution is the game you are in here! Transformation Those users use the data in the repository to make new and exciting data so you can start the process all over again! Ok ok, I think I have it, but why should we care? http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/curation-lifecycle-model http://www.consumerobsession.com/?p=164 Where do I start?
It's a mandate of funding
Increased impact
Reliable long term storage
New collaboration opportunities
Reduces the cost
Resources for education Don’t be put off by all of those acronyms and jargon. There are a lot of them - but they are all their waiting to help! You just have to decide which ones are best for your purposes. http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/67412.Nancy_Pearl
