Astronomy The study of the universe. Calendar Year: time required for the Earth to orbit around the sun once. Month: Roughly the amount of time for the moon to orbit around Earth. Day: Time required for the Earth to rotate once on its axis Ptolemy - An Earth-centered universe Copernicus (1543) - A Sun-centered universe Tycho Brahe (1500's) - used instruments to make accurate calculations Johannes Kepler (1609) - Sun centered universe where planets traveled in impercect orbits around. Galileo (1609) - turned a telescope to the skies, and discovered various planets. Isaac Newton - discovered the laws of gravity to explain the attraction between planets and the Sun. Edwin Hubble (1920's) - stated that there were other galaxies beyond the Milky Way
