Hygiene factors are aspects which surround the job: Reasonable level of salary, security, working condition and psychological needs. These issues however, does not make a employee work harder at his job once he is there. Herzberg himself gave an example of this theory; "If you keep your bathroom clean, few guests will notice this. However, they will likely notice if the bathroom is dirty (this is a literal 'hygiene' need).

I need to be paid on time each month so I can pay my bills. If I am not paid on time, I get really unhappy. But when I get paid on time, I hardly notice it. On the other hand, when my boss gives me a pat on the back, I feel good. I don't expect this every day and don't especially miss not having praise all of the time. "

In the motivator factor, Herzberg argued that there were certain factors which would motivate employees to work harder. Motivators are more worried with the actual job: Extra responsibilities, praise and promotion.
What is it?
Herzberg's theory states that men have two sets of needs; one to avoid pain, and the other to grow as a human psychologically. He proposed the two factor theory for motivation:
- Motivational Factors
- Hygiene Factors
Herzberg's theory appears to parallel Maslow's needs hierarchy. Individuals look for the gratification of higher-level psychological needs having to do with achievement, recognition, responsibility, advancement, and the nature of the work itself. However, Herzberg added a new dimension to this theory, including factors that cause dissatisfaction as well, such as company policies, supervision, technical problems, salary, interpersonal relations on the job, and working conditions.

-Identifying that there are factors that in general will motivate and demotivate groups of employees, some of which are in the control of managers (like level of responsibility and working conditions) and some which are outside of their control (like personal life).
-Herzberg's model can be used to identify broad issues that need to be addressed or mitigated in general. For example, in an environment where employees are unsure of their job security, managers can try to mitigate the demotivating effect by providing open communication, and by reassuring employees about the situation.
-The disadvantages are that Herzberg's model is more of a generalization that may not be appropriate to all groups of employees or individuals within a group. Herzberg based his theory on interviews with accountants and engineers. His findings are not necessarily directly applicable to vastly different employee groups. Hourly employees may not be particularly interested in job enlargement and enrichment, and may be more motivated by increased pay. Some employees may be more motivated by flexible work arrangements. Additionally, too much of a good thing can be bad: giving an employee responsibility they are not prepared for can be overwhelming and become a de-motivator
