high cost of purchasing and installation
maintenance and upkeep are hidden costs
training all members in a meaningful way is costly and takes a great deal of time
boards in Ontario and across the nation are increasingly facing pressure to cut budgets
incremental updates in both hardware and software are difficult to keep up with Barriers to Use Definition of Balanced Literacy
Each area in literacy is given ample teaching and instruction time.
What is technology? Various electronic devices (Computers, Document Camera, Smart board, hand held devices, cameras, scanners etc) Creating a Balanced Literacy Using Technology Barriers to Use Training
Initiatives such as a SMARTboard in every classroom are useless without proper training for all teachers
a single training session at the beginning of the year is insufficient
training needs to cover troubleshooting and work arounds
are already overburdened teachers willing to attend more training and follow up meetings to discuss strategies? Barriers to Use Hardware
hardware can easily breakdown or stop functioning properly. What happens then?
who is responsible for keeping drivers up to date?
how can boards hope to keep up with incremental hardware improvements without bankrupting themselves
hardware is designed to be obsolete within a certain number of years
even if hardware remains functional will it meet the demands of future software packages? Barriers to Use Software
who is responsible for updating software to the most current version available?
when major new versions are released do you spend the money to upgrade?
how do you block the use of inappropriate uses of software? i.e. browsing to questionable sites or sending cruel or hurtful messages within social media
though open source and freeware are inexpensive options they are also less stable and use formats that are not widely supported
using unlicensed software opens boards to possible legal repercussions Barriers to Use Limitations
SMARTboards and many digital whiteboards have a single point of touch sensitivity. This is not how touchscreens are used in the real world
many parts of North America still lack high speed Internet
you are more likely to find wifi at a coffee shop than in a school
resources are often limited and as such are shared throughout a school. This can make accessing them difficult

Begin by transferring information to power points, interactive WebQuests, Prezi, Weebly websites.Prezi is an online version of PowerPoint, that allows multiple users to access it, you can make an interactive lesson for students to follow. (Can be accessed at school or home)
Reading activities, interactive stories that can be projected through document cameras.
Presentations can be electronic, creating videos, websites or power points.
Writing activities can be done by making comic strips, brochures, power points, websites Technology is a great way to engage students.It is not just about substituting written essay for an electronic version.
It helps the student edit their work with the help of Spell and Grammar check.
Gives student independence.
Helps teachers make things more interesting and for those who do not have access to technology daily it is a real treat for students.

the Classroom -Students feel that specific technological applications such as word processing and web-based searching were important in enhancing their knowledge in all academic areas
-Students have an interest in seeing more technology in their classrooms – especially laptops
-They are concerned with schools not being up-to-date in terms of technologies, faculty, and curricula
-Students believe that their schools do not look like ‘the world in which they live’

- Students are able to stay connected to their school work at any time by having their interactive classroom online and sent to their hand-held devices
- Able to reach their teacher's assistance from a distance
- Students can grasp information that has been made readily available to them without leaving their classrooms
- Communicating and interacting with their fellow classmates in a different setting other than face to face

Smart Boards A smart board is an interactive piece of technology that is used in school classrooms. Often when a classroom has a smart board it replaces the use of the chalkboard. Pro's of the smart board -With the SMART Board, you can control any application through the touch board. So instead of working from behind the computer keyboard, you (or your students) can be at the front of the classroom physically interacting with the display.
-You can use any of the 4 colours of markers or the eraser to write in digital ink over applications, web pages, or moving video. The SMART board still works if you lose the pens. (There are 4 coloured pen holders and one eraser. When you lift the pen out of the slot, it selects the colour or the eraser. When you touch the screen, it uses the selected color or the eraser.)
-Like other digital ink software applications, you can save your work into a notebook file, and you can convert handwriting into text. Cons of the Smart board -Students may find it difficult to use
-The projector is a separate cost, costing approx 800 dollar's.
-Technical problems can interfere with lessons.
-There is no research on the long term learning effects of a smart board - Distraction caused by the "other" use of the hand-held devices such as texting, and other social media sites popularly used by the intermediate students
- Not all students are able to afford such hand-held devices, therefore leading to segregation from those who can and those who can't
- Schools aren't all funded to have such technology in their classrooms therefore some students receive such benefits from bringing in their own devices and others less fortunate do not
- Students in the classroom whom do not use such devices are distracted by those who are using them
-Studies have yet to suggest that using hand-held devices improve the learning of the students in their classrooms Con's of Hand-Held Devices in the Intermediate Classroom: Teacher's Idea's for Hand-Held Usage iPad's and iPod's in the
intermediate classroom: -Young people today are becoming more independent on technologies to communicate, gather information, and extend social experiences as it is important that our educational system evolves to meet these demands for our students
-With economic and technological changes in our society today as well as the advances in understanding how humans learn has created challenges for educators today
-A challenge today is over the concerns in finding the best way to meet the needs of children who are living in a world of information and communications-related digital technologies (web hand held devices, cell phones, gaming consoles)
-With this children growing up today are becoming comfortable with using these technologies and finding information and interacting with others through technology More Pro's dealing with the Smart board -Gives students a hands on learning experience with technology.
-Benefits for special needs and adapts for any age group.
-Helps organize lessons and makes it easy for teachers to share lessons.

Interactive whiteboards are an effective way to interact with digital content and multimedia in a multi-person learning environment. Learning activities with an interactive whiteboard may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Manipulating text and images• Making notes in digital ink• Saving notes for later review by using e-mail, the
• Viewing websites as a group
• Demonstrating or using software at the front of a
room without being tied to a computer
• Creating digital lesson activities with templates,
images and multimedia
• Writing notes over educational video clips
• Using presentation tools that are included with the
whiteboarding software to enhance learning materials
