Transcript of Brainwashing/Doublethink 1984
websites and applications used for networking.
Brainwashing is to make (someone) adopt radically different beliefs by using systematic and often forcible pressure.
Doublethink is the act of ordinary people simultaneously accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct.
The Chinese used brainwashing in the 1950s during the Korean War.
It was believed that they did it to make captured troops to effectively organize and resist their imprisonment.
The Chinese would isolate prisoners in a room where the prisoners would have no social and physical interactions.
Then they put them in a more comfortable situation (e.g. better food, better sleeping quarters) after being alone and abused.
It worked on some, but majority did not work.
CIA used brainwashing as a propaganda strategy to weaken communist claims by the American Prisoners of War (P.O.W.) in Korean communist camps in which they had voluntarily expressed their sympathy for communism.
Social media doesn't limit itself to ages, races, languages, or people.
People nowadays spend most of their free time on these sites
The Three Stages of Brainwashing
Stage One: Breaking Down the Self
100% sure that everyone in the class knows the social media sites to the right.
All of these partake in an isolated area away from human contact.
Rather than spend time outside, or with other people, many live out their lives through a screen or a lens.
Assault on Identity:
You are not who you think you are.
You are bad.
Who am I? Where am I? What am I supposed to do?
Agree with me that you are bad.
Stage Two: The Possibility of Salvation
I can help you.
Compulsion to Confession:
You can help yourself.
Channeling of Guilt:
This is why you're in pain.
Releasing of guilt:
It's not me; it's my beliefs.
Stage Three: Rebuilding the Self
anything that sends you a message without your knowledge of it.
Progress and Harmony:
If you want, you can choose good.
Final Confession and Rebirth:
I choose good.

What is brainwashing and doublethink?
How does brainwashing relate into today's society?
How would you brainwash people?
The Big Brother's slogan is doublethink.
It suggests two polar opposites are the same. Though
we are taught that such and such have nothing in common, the Party has made the masses believe that
those antonyms coincide and represent the same idea.
"...to hold simultaneously two opinions which canceled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them..."
Originated from George Orwell's
It is Newspeak.
Winston said "even to understand the word 'doublethink' involved the use of doublethink, " Therefore we can no longer explain it, or else we will be vaporized for thoughtcrime
Nicole Pingul & Rachele Reyes
Winston's job is at the Ministry of Truth where he rewrites articles to benefit the Party. He is aware of the lies, yet everyone else blindly believes the "new truths." In this way, the citizens, excluding Winston and a few others, are brainwashed to believe in whatever the Party puts out.
Doublethink in Modern Society
"You must fit in."/"You must stand out."
"Follow your dreams."/"Find a secure job."
"Express yourself."/"Wear the latest trend."
"Rags to riches"/"Money can't buy happiness."
"Don't lie."/"Don't say anything rude."
