When the clutch is engaged, you move the gear lever to change the position of the the dog clutch. There are three dog clutches on a standard five speed manual. The dog clutch moves from side to side to select the gear that the driver has chosen. There is one dog clutch for every two gears, including reverse. Because all the lay shaft gears have to be going in the same direction, there is an idler gear put in to reverse the direction of the last main shaft gear. When you push down on the clutch pedal, the pressure plate disconnects from the clutch plate, therefore the engine gets disconnected from the transmission.
Impact on Mankind
If the driving gear has 45 teeth and the driven gear has 15 teeth the gear ratio would be 3:1. Therefore the mechanical advantage would be three. This means that, for every one revolution of the driving gear, there would've been three revolutions by the driven gear. In the car, the transmission is a vital part of the engine. Even in an automatic transmission car. Without the gearbox the car wouldn't be able to convert the engine power to the axles to drive the car.
The forces acting upon the gears are friction, pull and push. The forces acting upon the car are friction, air resistance and gravitational pull. The gears in a car involve contact forces such as friction, pull and push, these act upon each other when in contact. These forces only act on an object when contact is made. One force that acts upon the car's performance is non-contact, gravitational pull. This is the force that keeps us and our cars on the ground, to an extent.
The way cars are designed today are completely different from when they were first designed. Today our design engineers think about all the key forces that affect the car runs. When cars were first built, they would generally have a rectangular bonnet then a square cab then a rectangular boot. This increases air resistance and is less fuel efficient. But today's sports cars are designed so they are sleek and have low air resistance meaning a quicker and more efficient drive. Many sports cars also contain of a rear wing to increase down force and risk taking off at high speeds. As our knowledge of forces grows, our cars are getting more and more sleek and efficient.
Gears in a Manual Car
The car has had a massive impact on mankind by making traveling a lot quicker and a lot less work when traveling heavy and fragile goods. The car made it possible to work further from home as people did not need to walk to work anymore. Although, there are some flaws with the car. At the present day most people rely on their car to get them to and from work. Wherever they are, or wherever they are going, at any point in time their car could break down due to any sort of engine or other issue. Today's cars are extremely advanced compared to when they were first introduced. But that doesn't mean they aren't going to break down. In the UK, a whopping 25% of their air pollution comes from the exhaust and fumes from cars.
