Enlightenment Influences : Nicolaus Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus, of Toruń Poland, was one of the most influential people during the Enlightenment. His teachings and ideas helped to grow science to what it is today.
Enlightenment Themes and Principles
The major themes and principles of the Enlightenment include the focus on individuality, different views on government, and different opinions on religions to name a few.
Nicolaus Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus studied planetary movements for over 25 years, starting in the early 1500s. The main theory he is known for publishing is the Heliocentric Theory. This theory states that the sun is located in the center of the universe. Although his theory was proved wrong, it was still revolutionary due to the fact that it contradicted the popular belief at the time, which was the Geocentric Theory. The Geocentric Theory was the Earth centered view of the universe.
From Copernicus to the Enlightenment
Nicolaus Copernicus created revolutionary ideas that would pave the way for others to share their teachings during the Enlightenment. The main element that would be used over and over again was going against popular belief. This is formed from his Heliocentric Theory. When people saw his bravery to go against the majority, it caught on. Others began to follow in his footsteps.
Copernicus' Influence on Future Science
Nicoulaus Copernicus has had many influences on modern day science. People admire him even today for the dedication that he held when working on the heliocentric theory. He spent 25 years of his life studying the planetary movements. He did that all because he knew the geocentric theory was wrong. He knew there was a problem in Ptolemy's idea, and was dedicated to find its solution. That amount of dedication is idealized even today, and used as an example for how hard scientists need to work when solving a problem.
The Enlightenment, also known as the Age of Reason was a movement that reached its height during the mid 1700s. This movement helped reshape people's ideas on government, religion, and individuality.
