Transcript of Film Editor Project

Film editors assemble footage of feature films, television shows, documentaries, and industrials into a seamless end product. They manipulate plot, score, sound, and graphics to refine the overall story into a continuous and enjoyable whole. Film Editing Equipment The Moviola allowed editors to study individual shots in their cutting rooms, to determine more precisely where the best cut-point might be. Old The entire purpose of the film synchronizer is to ensure that the film is in "sync" with other reels of film when it is hand-cranked through the gangs. Moviola Film Synchronizers A film splicer is a device which can be used to physically join together lengths of photographic film. Film Splicers Qualifications Split Reels A split reel is a motion picture film reel in two halves that, when assembled, hold a specific length of motion picture film that has been wound on a plastic core. A combination of post-secondary education and practical experience is the best preparation to become a film editor. The industry is very competitive and a college diploma or bachelor’s degree with courses in filmmaking is highly recommended. Formal training at a film school can also be quite valuable. A bachelor’s degree in journalism that offers courses in editing is useful for those interested in television editing. Minimum rates for assistant editors working on motion pictures range from about $700 to almost $2,000 a week, depending on the province and the size of the production. Those who have climbed the ladder to the top position of supervising picture editors earn minimums ranging from just under $2,000 to more than $3,000 weekly. Editors working on theatrical motion pictures, made-for-television movies, and mini-series tend to have higher minimums than those working in episodic television. Salary Overall yearly incomes for experienced film editors can range from $32,000 to over $150,000, depending on their experience, the industry they’re working in, and their ability to consistently find work. Some editors sign long-term contracts with production houses. These are usually renegotiated every few years. New Thelma Schoonmaker A famous film editor Thelma Schoonmaker is an American film editor who has worked with director Martin Scorsese for over forty years. She has edited all of Scorsese's films since Raging Bull. Thelma has received seven Academy Award nominations for best editing, and has won three times (for Raging Bull, The Aviator, and The Departed). Kira B. End
