Patchwork Quilt Experience based Teaching is Grandma's
Patchwork Quilt Ongoing Process Concepts are "sewn" together The "quilter" is responsible for putting all of the pieces together Teaching is experience based Patches of a handmade quilt come from different experiences throughout life. When creating a quilt, one may take a patch from an old baby blanket, a christening gown, or even a treasured wedding dress.
Like each patch of Grandma's patchwork quilt, teaching is based on individual experiences which are interdependent on one another. Teaching is an ongoing process Patchwork quilts get better with age-it takes a long time for a quilt to be ready for use.
The longer a quilt is worked on, the more experiences it contains.
Like a quilt, the more experiences a person encounters, the greater amount of knowledge they have obtained.
As educators, we try our best to create real life situations for our students to experience in our classrooms. In education, concepts are "sewn" together The stitches are what make a patchwork quilt a quilt, and not just individual patches.
Just like a quilter might sew patches together to create the full experience, teachers sew concepts together to make experiences meaningful.
These concepts, or "patches" of knowledge or experience, are interdependenct on each other. Working together, the experiences and concepts mean much more.
Examples in teaching: scaffolding and subject integration
In education, the "quilter,"
or learner, is responsible for putting all of the pieces together effectively Quilt patches come from a variety of places.
In the same sense, educational concepts and experiences come from a multitude of sources.
The "quilter," or learner, must take all of his or her experiences and piece them together in a meaningful way.
Throughout a student's life, many different teachers will provide the "patches," experiences or ideas, but it is up to the learner to choose the most important and create knowledge from those experiences.
