1972 Andes Plane Crash
Located in South America along the west coast
It is the longest mountain range in the world, streching 4,500 miles
The highest point is Aconcagua in Argentina, at an elevation of 22,841 feet
Andes Mountains
45 people total were on the plane
On the plane was a Uruguayan rugby team, their friends, and their families, one of them being 19-year-old medical student named Dr. Canessa
They were flying to Chile for a rugby match
Only 16 of the 45 survived
12 died on when the plane crashed at an altitude of 11,800 feet
Another 5 people died within a few hours
1 more was added to the list a week later
17 days afer the crash, an avalance killed 8 more people
Death Count
After waiting for 2 months, Dr. Canessa and Fernando Parrado treked for 10 days through the mountains to try to find help.
During those two months of waiting, they ate their dead teammates to surivive
After 72 days of waiting the 14 people remining at the crash site were rescued via helicopter
40 years after the crash, last year, the surviving members held a rugby match in honors of their teammates that had died in the crash
