The Effects
Whitewashing in Literature and Textbooks
Definition - to gloss over or cover up vices, crimes or scandals or to exonerate by means of a perfunctory investigation or through biased presentation of data

Caleb's Crossing includes a cushioned version of the racism Caleb and The Wompanoag faced

An example of whitewashed textbooks - Several million social studies textbooks printed in 2015 excluded information regarding Jim Crow laws, the KKK and used words like "worker" and "migrant" instead of the word slave
Whitewashing of Native American People
Native American students were humiliated and stripped of their sacred clothing, jewelry, and hair to attend school
Hair represents the pure thoughts and spiritual status of an Individual, showing the bonds and spiritual oneness of a Family and defines the cultural harmony and spiritual alignment of a Nation according to Native American elders
The cushioning of racism in literature, especially one as popular as Caleb's Crossing, may be offensive towards Native American people

After reading this novel, people may feel like the the treatment towards Native Americans at this time was not as extreme as it actually was
