Shave Ice Survey By Jamie Fujino and Kelli Matsuo
Human Physiology Mr. Kirby Nii Period 02
October 15, 2012 Many Aiea High School students go to get shave ice after school. It is HOT in Hawaii, so shave ice is the perfect, refreshing snack! :) Shave ice is also a very tasty treat! Observations What is the most popular shave ice flavor among Aiea High School students? Research Question If the choices strawberry, guava, vanilla, lemon-lime, coke, and banana were given as shave ice flavors, then most students from Aiea High School would choose strawberry because it’s a universal flavor. Hypothesis We LOVE strawberry! Lots of people also like strawberry; it’s a very common flavor. Rationale for Hypothesis... Data Collection Strawberry: 124
Vanilla: 82
Banana: 18
Lemon Lime: 12
Guava: 3
Coke: 11 Chi-Square We decided to choose
these flavors because
we felt like they were
very common and good. We sampled 250 Aiea
High School students
and this was our results... A chi-square test to see a test to see if your hypothesis was right. Our hypothesis was to see if there was a preference of flavors of shave ice. This test will prove to us if there is a preference, therefore we will be able to accept or reject our hypothesis and move on from there. Critical Value: 11.07 11.07 < 294.73 We accept our hypothesis because the critical value (11.07) was less than our x2 (x-squared) value (294.71); therefore out of all the shave ice flavors, strawberry is preferred. Analysis / Conclusion What are we going to do with our new information?
We are going to share our data with a shave ice vendor. Hopefully this will help them when they are selecting which flavor syrups to purchase for their customers. Extension The End ! Shaved ice is a dessert made by shaving a block of ice. It resembles a snow cone. Shave ice dates back to the sugar plantation days. The Japanese immigrants came to Hawaii to work on the plantations and also brought along the refreshing snack, shave ice.
