Attention Deficit hyperactivity disorder What is it? Causes Symptoms Diagnostics Treatments Medication Conditions that can coexist Most common childhood disorder that can continue through adolescence and adulthood Three Subtypes Predominanly Hyperactive-Impulsive Predominanly Inattentive Combined Hyperactive-Impulsive and Inattentive Scientist don't know what cause ADHD Genes play a large role Many studies show that twins shows that ADHD runs in families. Looking at several genes that can make people more like to obtain this disorder. Children who have this gene have thinner brain tissue in the area where attention is associated. Environmental Studies show a posible link between cigaretts and alcohol use during pregnancy Lead exposure in old building where preschoolers attend can have higher risk of ADHD. Inattention Easily Distracted Difficulty focusing on one thing Not see to listen when spoken to Hyperactive Fidget and squirm in their seats Talk nonstop Be constantly in motion Have trouble sitting still at school, dinner and story time. Impulsive Be very impatient Blurt out inappropriate comments ADHD symptoms appear earlier in life Often between the ages 3 to 6 Hard to diagnose No single test can diagnose ADHD. Pediatrics or specialist will determine if a child: undected seizures linked to other conditions. Has a middle ear infection causing hearing problems. Has a learnig disability Specialist will ask Are behaviors excessive and long-term? Do these action happen more often then their peers? Do they happen in several setting or just one. Some children with ADHD also have other illnesses Learning Disabilities Oppostional Defiant Disorder Conduct Disorder Anxiety and Depression Bipolar Disorder Tourette Syndrome ADHD may coexist with sleeping disorder, bed- wetting, substance abuse, ect. Treatment include medication, serval types of psychotherapy, education or training, or combination of treatments. Most common treatment is a "stimulant." Come in different forms, such as pill, capsule, liquid or skin patch.
