Functions of the Liver

What is Cirrhosis?
chronic damage to the liver results in scar tissue
scar tissue replaces healthy tissue in the liver
slow deterioration over time-interferes with blood flow
loss of appetite
blood in stool
accumulation of bilirubin in the liver
yellowing of the skin and eyes

what to look for:
enlargement of the liver
Biopsy Revealing Cirrhosis
a set treatment for cirrhosis of the liver
there are treatments available for complications associated with cirrhosis
fluid collects in the abdomen
could lead to bacterial peritonitis infection
treatment: diuretics (fluid- removing medications) and IV antibiotics
Complication: Portal Hypertension
increased amount of pressure in the portal vein
treatment: beta-blocker prescription
Complication: Esophageal Varices and Gastropathy
enlarged blood vessels
progression of portal hypertension
treatment: compression with a band ligation
and affects a
Major Cause: Hepatitis B and D
cause infections that attack the liver
leads to inflammation of liver
Major Cause: Long-Term Alcohol Abuse
excessive consumption of alcohol
leads to swelling and inflammation of liver
Major Cause: Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
accumulation of fat in the liver
result of poor diet
Autoimmune Inflammation: immune reponse cells attack liver cells
Primary Biliary Cirrhosis and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: swelling of the bile ducts-blocks flow of bile, destroys ducts
acummulation of copper or iron-inflammation
Complication: Hepatic Encephalopathy
accumulation of toxins in the brain
treatment: cleansing bowel with lactulose (oral laxative)
Complication: Hepatocellular Carcinoma
possible treatment: surgery OR injection of anti-cancer drugs into liver
Complication: Hepatorenal Failure
treatment: hemodialysis to cleanse blood
End Stage Cirrhosis: Liver Transplant
with the exception of inherited diseases.

limit alcohol intake
Preventing Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
have a healthy, well-balanced diet
Preventing Hepatitis B and D
get the Hepatitis B vaccine
