Transcript of SOUTHERN COLONIES
Created for farming
The Southern colonists made the land for farming.
They grew cash crops to make money.
The colony started in 1633.
The colony was created for to help England Control southeastern North America.
Colonies first settled the southern part of Carolina.
The area had great farm land and good harbors.
King Charles 2nd wanted to start another colony to keep french and Spain out of the area.
The boundaries were North was claimed by the english.
West was claimed by the French.
The South was claimed by the Southern colonies.
The East was claimed by the Atlantic Ocean.
Southern colonies were watery worlds so they had things like bays, rivers and wetlands.
The area was called tidewater.
The colonies used the water to transport goods like crops and more.
The area was rained on alot so they could get good farming.
Virginia was the first ever North America colony.
In 1609 the colonists created the first elected legislature in the colony.
A legislature is a group of people with a power to make and change laws.
All of the Southern colonies were made for a different purpose.
King Charles made a colony from the south of Virginia called Carolina.
The colonists first settled in the southern because it was good farming land and many excellent harbors.
Every year the colony was around it dropped popularity.
The England rulers wanted a colony on North America.
John White was the leader of the colony.
He left to get supplies for the colony then when he came back nothing was left.
still nobody knows what happen to them but all that was left was a tree that said Croatian.
English merchants started the Virginia Company of London.
Their goal was to build a settlement in North America.
To get supplies and other things they raised money to go on the trip.
The people of Jamestown went trough tough times and a lot of people died.
But after those bad times the people made a come back and made it successful.
LIFE IN SOUTH
The long growing season and warm, damp climate of the south made the region perfect for growing rice and tobacco.
Planters became very wealthy of of cash crops because they exported the crops to other colonies and countries.
The planters got slaves to do hard labor.
Colonists grew tobacco on small farms as well as plantations
The whole idea of the south was for farming.
Eliza Lucas Pinckney began experimenting on her fathers farm.
She was experimanting with indigo she got it to grow much easyier.
The colonists could make 100,000 of it a year.
Slaves worked on plantations.
They became of the plantations.
All started when slavery started to be legal in Georgia.
Interesting fact George Washington had slaves of his own.

James Oglethorpe lead the first group of settlers to Georgia.
J.O. made friends with Native Americans.
He traded things with them like Choctaws and more.
Made colony of Virginia
Gave land to James Olgethorpe. Then he named that land Georgia.
He named Georgia afer king George the 2nd and also lead first group of settlers to Georgis
He started a another colony on his land. He hoped it would keep France and Spain out of the area. The land was called Carolina.
She experimanted in her fathers farm on indigo and she got the colony to grow 100,000 of it a year
In 1729 Carolina became 2 separate colonies.
North Carolina and South Carolina.

What they did was farming.

The 3 main jobs were farming, make money and own laws.

King Charles of England gave land in North America to Cecilius Calvert and he was also known as Lord Baltimore, he was catholic.
He tried to make the colony for Catholics.
In 1649 a tolerance act was the first law in North America to prove that Christians could worship freely.

Also created it so the french and Spain from south Carolina.
James Oglethorpe was friendly and gave poor people a free trip to Georgia and gave them land.
He also made friends with Native Americans.
He made strict rules for the colony like drinking and having slaves were illegal.
