The Element Radon
Atomic number:86
Radon
Radon was discovered by a German scientist named Friedrich Ernst Dorn in the year 1900 in Halle,Germany.Friedrich discovered radon while studying radiums decay chain. In 1908 radon was named niton but was then changed to radon in 1923.Radon was one of the earliest discovered radioactive elements after uranium, thorium, polonium and radium.
Discovery of Radon
At room temperatures, radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless noble gas, meaning it is very unreactive. When radon is cooled down it becomes visible and can be seen with a yellow glow,as the temperature decreases the color changes to an orange-red because of its radiation.Radon is very radioactive,it is believed to be responsible for an estimated ammount of 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the U.S. each year, making it the second largest cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking.Radon is naturally produced through the decay of radium and seeps its way into peoples homes, usually through the lowest level, through cracks in walls or floors, cavities in the walls or even in the water supply. The reason this happens is because radon is produced in the soil then goes into the air above and makes its way into your home,in fact, nearly 1 in 15 homes in the U.S. are estimated to have elevated radon levels.Even though radon is radioactive it can still be used in cancer therapy to kill cancerous cells, however, this is no longer done because of the fact that it causes cell damage and also because safer treatments are now more commonly used.
