Letter to a future student

First of all, I will suggest the future students to read the book of Switch, because I think this is really helpful book that indicates a lot of useful strategies for them, especially, college students. For example, the book Switch suggests: “Checklists educate people about what’s best, showing them the ironclad right way to do something” (Heath 221). Checklists are helpful all the time. It tells us the tasks that we need to do in order to get what we want. It also lists right things which help us to avoid mistakes. The checklists direct our Rider (the one that indicate the Elephant to enter on a right path) to do the right things. For example, in the college, we need to make sure manage our time well. We can make a checklist that shows what we should do at certain time, so we will not waste time. Moreover, it promotes us work more efficient. Keep checking checklist regularly, so that we can notice the mistake or oblivious events immediately. Checklists also help us build a good habit as well. “Ambiguity is the enemy. Any successful change requires a translation of ambiguous goals into concrete behaviors. In short, to make a switch, you need to script the critical moves” (53-54). Ambiguity makes us lose direction. We never want to underwent or sink into this situation. Ambiguity is the obstacle that prevents us to reach our goal, so we need to know what we need to do and act at once in order to make change and achieve. I will strongly suggest the future students to prevent themselves to stuck in this circumstance, because one research states one of the reasons that students fail out of college are vagueness about long-range goals and inappropriate choice of major. A lot of students are not sure about their future, especially first year students. However, students should take time to consider their goal seriously. Goals are the destination that we want to reach. If there are no goals, there is no motivation for us to moving further. On the other hands, if we set up the goals, we will act with motivation or faith. Most of students are struggling with their majors and careers. When students are choosing their major, they may have different standpoints with their parents. Their parents want them to choose a career that can earn satisfying salaries, but the students do not have any interest on the career. This probably have some influence on students’ decision. They may choose the major that their parents want, but they give up the major that they really want to choose. I am very disagreeing with decision. Students should choose the major that they want to major in, because it can influence their future totally. They do not want to do a career that they do not like every day. If they want to regret in the later time, it is impossible for them to go back. Students must be aware of their own development, goals and who they want to be.

No Procrastination !
I took these pictures from one of my assignments from English class. Our professor asked us to talk about the bad habits that we had. A lot of my classmates mention that procrastination is their bad habit and I strongly agree with this. When I ask my friends that how is their research paper going on, they said that they do not even start yet. They did not start doing their work because there were still few days left. Most of their homework was done just before the due date or the time that they need to submit online. They put off doing their assignments until the last minutes. I really want to advise the future students that we must finish our homework before we play. You do not want stay all night to complete your homework with any sleep, so we should always finish our homework as soon as possible. We should not wait in the last minutes, because we will regret deeply. I was so regret and I blamed myself after I procrastinated my homework as well as my friends.
letter to a future student
Through this e portfolio, I am going to introduce myself and express the experience that I completed during my first year college.

After five years, I will graduate at my ideal University. My families and friends will all come to the graduation ceremony. We are taking pictures and celebrating for these long years of academic studying. Later, I got the job that has a stable salary and I am enjoying with my life every day. This is my picture that I imaged for my future and this is my goal. This goal seems very simple, but it requires certain hard work. I believe that the more I try, the greater my reward will be in the end. In order to accomplish this goal, I need to work step by step, like the book Swith states: “A long journey starts with a single step” (250).

Welcome to my e portfolio
Professor: West
Lizhu Wang
Welcome to my e portfolio. My name is Lizhu who is an English leaner. English is not my first language, so it becomes a serious problem that I need to overcome. In this fall semester, I have determined myself to work hard to improve my English skills. Things did not go well at the beginning. In the beginning, I received a B on my first essay in ESL 33B class. The worse thing was that I even got a grade of C on the second essay. If I did not get an ideal grade on the next essays, I would definitely get a low grade. I decided to spend more time this class. I went to LTC to find tutors to help my grammar. They looked my essay and point out the mistakes that I made and taught why I was using wrong verb tense. I also spend time on the professor’s office hours. Compare to my classmates, they could just finish the in class essay very quick, but I need more time to think about my ideas and write essay with college level words. In order to get a good grade, I went to professor’s office hours to ask the questions on the essays and check for grammar mistakes. Finally, the professor affirmed my improvement and I received good grades on the following essays and revised essays. From this experience, it proved that the more I try, the greater my reward will be in the end.

Reflection on Southland
Southland is an outstanding book that contains different kinds of ideas, such as racism, segregation, uprising and love. The author Nina Revoyr told the story in a special way which based on the history of Los Angeles. After I read the Southland, I learned about the history that Japanese American experienced in United States as well as the black people. I believe the most complex and serious problem throughout this book is racism, such as the white men who often sneer Victor and black people. A lot boss did not give out the job for Negroes until it was during war time. They refused black people work for them because of the racism. Because of the war, they started to hire black people with reluctant mood. In the shipyard, they required a lot of work in order to prepare for the war, so they need more workers. These bosses were so selfish. When they need more workers to make more profits, they hired the black people. However, when there was no need for extra workers, they would just hired white men and said no to these black people who really need jobs to support families lives. The book also explain: “They washed at night, because the foreman who came on in the morning objected to seeing Negroes in the showers.” From this quotation, we can also see the unfair treatments or attitudes that these white men toward black people. Compare to nowadays, I felt the society was improved so well that the past. Nowadays, we try to be respect at other country’s culture and make lot friends from different country. It is peaceful and wonderful.

As the pictures that you can see, that are the notes that I made. When I was reading the book Southland, I always made note. I wrote down the main events that happened during the chapters. I also wrote down the character’s special information to help me remember the character. This book’s characters are a lot and complex. By making notes, I can quickly connect the characters together as well as the events. When I wrote the Southland responding journal, I can look at these notes to help know what I should need to write.
Successes and Failures Reflection
Vagueness about long-range goals and wrong decision on major are the reason that people failed in college. Some people do not know what they really want to do or what they really want to learn, so they may just choose the classes without consideration. Some people even do not have goals that they want to accomplish when they are taking classes in college. This can really influence their future, because they are wasting time and energy to seek for no goals. Goals are something that keeps us moving further. If we do not have goals, there are no motivations that tell us to move. The major is also the important thing that we need to make choice in college because it can relate to our career in the future. Some people might choose the major that their parents told them and they found out that their do not have any interests in it. Therefore, they change their major and it cause them waste time and money.

Successes and Failures Reflection
In my opinion, I think the attitude that we have when we face success and failure is very important. For example, we should not be over-confidence after we success our achievements. On the other hand, we should not be lose confidence and become depress after we encounter any failure. We should keep the faith that tells us to not give up easily all the time. My English class taught us that everyone should have a growth mindset which can help us accomplish higher achievements. I think the growth mindset basically means people who have a positive attitude. People with growth mindset will be willing to adventure for new challenges. They will not give up very easily. Instead of giving up, they will stand in an optimistic condition to solve problems or overcome obstacles. Obviously, each individuals need to be responsible to their own developed their own growth mindset. Growth mindset can influence student’s grade. For example, people have the growth mindset will not feel negative on some little mistakes. They will keep trying until they met the points that they want. If people have a fixed mindset, they keep in a bad mood after they experience some failure. Such as tests, if they did badly at first two tests, they may just drop the class. In short, having a growth mindset can promote us to achieve more achievements.

I think the diagrams are very helpful for us to figure out what kinds of mindset people may have by looking at their behaviors or views. These diagrams explains how people with a fixed –mindset think differently with people who have a growth-mindset. The result had showed that people can do more meaningful achievements if they have a growth- mindset
College Reading Reflection.
In the past, I almost translated all the words that I do not understand when I was reading a book. There were tons of words that I do not understand. I did not even see these words before, so I spend a lot of time to translate the words. However, when I was reading the Southland, I did not search all the words that I did not know. I started to only translate the words that are key words in order to understand the context. In this way, I will not waste too much time on typing the words by words to translate. I also began to make notes when I was reading. It really helps me to recognize all the character and remember the events that happen before. If I want to go back, I will just read the notes that I made. Then, I can easily find the information that I need to connect the information together and think about all the information profoundly and easily.
