What is this book about?
It's 1965 in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Ponyboy can count on his brothers and his friends, but not on much else besides trouble with the Socs, a vicious gang of rich kids who get away with everything, including beating up greasers like Ponyboy. At least he knows what to expect--until the night someone takes things too far.
Who is S.E. Hinton?
Susan Eloise Hinton was born in the 1950's in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a place that she describes as “a pleasant place to live if you don’t want to do anything.” She began The Outsiders at the age of 15, inspired by her frustration with the social divisions in her high school and the lack of realistic fiction for high school readers. Hinton’s publishers decided that Hinton should publish her novel under the name S. E. Hinton in order to hide her gender. They worried that readers would not respect The Outsiders, which features male protagonists and violent situations, if they knew a female wrote it. Hinton has said that she does not mind using an pen name that is gender neutral. The Outsiders was first published in 1967. Hinton currently lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma and continues to write at the age of 65.
The president was Lyndon B. Johnson (Democrat). He became president in 1963 after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
The Vietnam War was raging and Johnson escalated the United States' involvement that year.
What was it like in 1965?
Times were "groovy"!
After designer Mary Quant introduced the mini-skirt in 1964, fashions of the 1960's were changed forever. The mini-skirt was eventually to be worn by nearly every stylish young woman in the western world and pushed out the longer skirt lengths that were worn before. The mini dress was usually A-line in shape or a sleeveless shift. In 1964, French designer Andre Courreges introduced the "space look", with trouser suits, white boots, goggles, and box-shaped dresses whose skirts soared three inches above the knee. These were mainly designed in fluorescent colors and shiny fabrics such as PVC and sequins. Plaids were a popular choice.
Big hair (including "beehives") and big, fake eyelashes were popular among women.
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan were top sellers.
Best Film Oscar Winner: The Sound of Music
