REDUCING WASTE: RECYCLING What is Composting? COMPOSTING Fallingbrook has a serious issue concerning how much waste we put in the garbage.
There are 7 garbage bins in the gym but no recycling or compost bins.
The result is that recycling and composting goes into the garbage bins. STATISTICS Our Plan Reducing HARMFUL WASTE When buying chemicals, choose less toxic items
When using packaging choose the least harmful to the environment
Use paper bags, the one that can go into recycling or compost pile
Dispose of chemicals safely REUSE: Look for items at the garage sale or free-cycle program
Donate unused items
Rinse glass jars and reuse them again Organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled
Biodegrades organic wastes Our plan is to EDUCATE you about what goes in the garbage, recycling, and composting bins, by adding signs on the garbage bins that say what belongs in each bin.
Then, we plan on REDUCING the amount of garbage by adding recycling and composting bins alongside the garbage bins in the gym. That way, when you are getting up to throw out your garbage, you'll put everything where it belongs. Then we won't create as much pollution and we won't have to worry about the
effect it has on the environment as much. FALLINGBROOK MIDDLE SCHOOL'S GARBAGE ISSUE PURCHASE LOOSE VEGETABLES
Use reusable bags
Buy things that you can use for years and years
Buy food in bulk Benefits of
Recycling By recycling 1 bottle, you save 1000 years in the landfill.
About 60% of our garbage is recyclable
The more people recycle, the cheaper it gets.
Recycling helps families save money, especially in communities
Recycling creates four jobs, for every one job created in the waste management and disposal industries.
Environmentally friendly
Less waste in landfills What Can You Do? What Goes In The
Blue Bin? Juice boxes
Cardboard pizza boxes
Plastic containers
Tins and cans
Milk/juice cartons & boxes (straws in garbage)
Paper
Coke cans
Plastic water bottles Follow the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
Tell all your friends and family
Be aware of what goes in each bin
Be eco-friendly
Bring litter less lunches
Put composting in the composting bin
Put recycling in the recycling bin
Join community litter pick ups
Spread the word
Help your friends, if they put waste in the wrong bins
Buy food with less packaging
Use reusable water bottles Litterless lunch! Garbage Thanks for listening to our presentation! Hopefully you will remember to Recycle and Compost. Effects On The Environment Creates sustainable environment
Reduces the amount of solid wastes that goes in landfill
Creates nutrient-rich soil structure and prevents the erosion of topsoil
Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. In one day, the 7 garbage bins in the gym are 19.32 kg, 17.5 kg of it is recyclable material
In 5 days, out of 96.6 kg, 87.5 kg of it is recyclable
In 1 school month, out of 386.4 kg, 350 kg of it is recyclable
In one school year, out of 2028.6 kg, 1837.5 kg of it is recyclable. That weighs the same as your average car! One garbage bin from the gym is a total of 2.76 kg of waste.
About 2.5 kg of that is recyclable material. That is over 3/4 of the bin. THE GARBAGE ISSUE Considering Composting As Part Of Our School BY: RANA Peel's Disposal System
Weekly pickups from curb
Garbage trucks pick up separate bins( recycling, garbage, composting)
Where Does It Go?
3 main places: landfill in Warwick Ontario, Recycling, Incineration
67%of garbage ends up in landfills
The paper, metal, plastic and glass get recycled
The stuff from the green bin gets composed. The rest gets trucked to a landfill in Michigan.
Waste removal services
Canada generates 12.4 million tonnes annually of garbage but only 3 tonnes go to recycling
Effect on environment
Chemicals release gas in ozone layer
Destroys natural habitats
Harms environment and animals Effects Of Reusing and Reducing Makes earth a healthier and beautiful place It prevents climate change (pollution). Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy. Recycling of one glass container saves enough energy.Every hour to light a 100-watt bulb for 4 ton of paper recycled a year saves 17 trees and 7000 gallons of water Yes we would consider composting as part of our school
Because composting has a lot of benefits. For example: it reduces pest problems, food scraps and yard waste make up 20 to 30 percent of what we throw away, and that should be composted. It would keep these materials out of landfills where they would take up space and release methane. Fallingbrook Falcons Recycling Project What are some environmental effects of this disposal system? Many people throw hazardous materials down the drain or in the garage and the chemicals effect the environment.
The chemicals can pollute the environment, endanger animal life's, if anything eats the garbage it might be endangering its life.
Even if there is no chemical some animal may come and eat something poisonous to their species and die
