Transcript of Weathering

Ice wedging is a mechanical weathering process caused when water freezes inside the cracks of rocks
Water may seep into a rock. As the water turns to ice, it expands and pushes against the sides of the crack, therefore, breaking the rock.
Mechanical weathering occurs when rocks are broken apart by physical processes. One way of mechanical weathering is Ice Wedging.

Climate
Mechanical weathering is most dominate in cold climates with medium amounts of rainfall, where chemical weathering is dominate in hot and wet climates.
A reason mechanical weathering is dominate in cold climate, is Ice wedging.
Chemical weathering
Chemical weathering occurs when chemical reactions dissolve minerals or change them into different materials.
Sometimes chemical weathering can change a mineral to a different substance!
For instance, iron, if it is chemically weathered, it turns into rust.

What is weathering?
Weathering is surface processes that weaken and break rock into smaller and smaller pieces.
The two types are chemical and mechanical weathering.

Say water and nutrients get into a rock. Then a seed comes along and decides to settle into that rock. the seed starts to grow and make roots. As it grows, the roots crack the rock.
Small burrowing animals dig sediment in the soil. The animal pushes these sediments to the surface. Once the sediments are out of the ground, a weathering process begins.
