Transcript of Theater Tools

This wrench was developed in the 1800s. It tightens and loosens nuts and bolts of all different sizes. The adjustable screw helps to secure a nut or bolt in place. The adjustable wrench is commonly used in vehicle repairs, especially tires.
Angle Grinder
Grinds and cuts metal pipe, and tile. Charged and powered by an electric motor, compressed air, or an outlet. This tool is handheld, making it easier to grind and cut.
Adjustable Wrench
C-Clamp
Designed to hold a piece of wood or metal in place. They are made of steel or cast iron and can be used by turning the screw through the bottom of the object until it reaches the desired length or pressure.
Chalk line
Makes straight lines on flat surfaces, making the task easier than doing it by hand. It's a string covered in dyed chalk that is placed across a surface. It is then lifted up and snapped, releasing the chalk and creating a line. This line is not permanent so it can be wiped away.
Air Compressor
Provides power to several different tools. The air in the tank is under pressure, so it creates a loud sound. This is mostly used in framing and roofing. This mobile tank is made of steel.
A-frame Ladder
Used to reach things out of someone's reach. These ladders are most common in household projects. They can typically hold up to 300 pounds. They are usually 6 to 12 feet.

Table Saw
Commonly known as a jigsaw. It is a hand-held saw with a toothed blade. Cuts wood in curves and other irregular shapes.
Pliers with a pivot point that move to increase the size of their jaws. They are used for simple jobs. They are used for gripping and bending types of hardware. They have fine teeth in the front and coarse teeth in the back.
Flat bladed end. It is used for tightening or loosening screws. often used in woodworking and fine jewelry making
It is a fastener and piece to the socket wrench. Without the socket and wrench, you couldn't adjust a nut or bolt.
Determines angles, measurements, and can be a straight edged ruler. Useful for carpentry.
Used for holding things down. Secures objects tightly to prevent any from moving. Used temporarily while doing woodworking and construction.
Hand-held mechanical tool that drives staples into a hard surface. Used in roofing, upholstery, and carpenting. There is a manual and a pneumatic type of staple gun.
Reaches high places and has to lean against a supportive wall. It has a base that should be firm on the ground. Does not contain an etension.
Circular saw mounted under a table or bench. The blade projects through the slot. This is a woodworking tool powered by an electric motor. Some have wheels on the bottom, making them portable.
Power saw that cuts wood across with its wide teeth blade. This saw has a round, flat blade and a handle trigger switch. Some may have a level for fine adjustments. They are portable and electrically powered.
Mainly used for removing and placing nails into a piece of wood. The side of the hammer that is split and curved is used to pull out the nails. The head of the hammer is semi-flat, for driving the nail into the wood. This hammer is designed to uphold major strikings of the nail.
Cuts wood across wood grain. Also known as a type of hand saw. The teeth are small and close together for more accurate cuts but the actual length of the saw can be small or large.
Used to lever or pry things apart. Removes staples, nails and can open crates made of wood.Usually made of steel or metal but can also be made of lead or titanium. It has a curved end with flat points for removing nails.
Used for cutting wood. It's a saw on a stand that can make accurate cutting pieces of wood at an angle. Used to make frames, cut and mold. It is turned on by holding the safety trigger, then you pull it down in order to cut the wood. Can crosscut up to 90 degrees with its pivot. The blade and saw don't move when cutting, making the cut accurate.
Helpful tool to have in the shop for extending already-existing cords with another cord. An extension cord is a power cable that is flexible and can have one or more sockets for plugging in other tools with. The range length of extension cords vary from 2 to 30 feet mostly but sometimes 300.
Extension ladders extend by lifting and sliding another set of rails that are together as one, for creating a high elevation to move up on. Extension ladders are a type of ladder that must lean against a supportive wall in order to be used because they to not contain a supportive base. The side rails interlock, keeping the ladder from moving anywhere.
A flat, steel square that is L-shaped. It is a useful tool for people in carpentry. Most models are from 20 to 8 inches and are primarily used for laying out and marking places for roofing, framing, and stairway work.
Used to examine if a surface is horizontal or vertical to the ground. There are different types of levels for certain areas in construction. Most areas contain a yellow pigment of water that shows if something is level or not with a bubble in it.
Pliers used by electricians. They are useful for cutting large diameter wires. They have a rigid nose for gripping wire. These pliers bend, twist, and cut wire.
A tool that attaches a socket. This tool wouldn't be useable without the help of a socket. It turns one direction until the nut or bolt is tight or loosened.
With a reciprocating saw, cutting is pushed and pulled by the motion of the blade. It is used in construction work to cut certain things off. These range in power and speed, but they all do the same job, which is cutting pipes and wood.
Used for boring out wood. The bit is placed in a piece of wood, rotated by a drill, resulting in a hole in the wood. If the bit is drilled too far, it will ruin and possibly break the piece of wood. This can result in splintering.
Locking pliers can lock in a position. One side of the pliers are smaller than what should be gripped by moving up the other part of the plier. This is mainly used in welding areas and holding a nut or bolt temoprarily.
This is used on smaller objects that need a small area painted. These rollers apply paint to objects like tables or chairs. Typically, they do not require an extending pole.
Different from other pliers because of how skinny they are. They are generally used by jewelry designers, electricians, and engineers. They help bend, fix, and snip wires. They are much longer and can reach smaller areas than other pliers.
A screwdriver with two slots where the nail can be placed in. It is better than a single slot because it is centered and is less likely to slip off of a nail.
Tool that carpenters use for their work in framing and trimming. A pneumatic pin nailer is used to trim a large, bulky piece of wood and it holds strength well. It's smaller than a nail gun and is run by compressed air.
This type of saw has two teeth on each side. The crosscut teeth only cut on a pull-type stroke, which is why it is called a pull saw. It is not an everyday tool, but is used in furniture.
The main use of a paint roller is to paint walls and ceilings. Sometimes you will have to use handle extensions to paint places that are out of your reach. There are a variety of paint rollers but we normally use manual rollers. Paint rollers are used with paint and create a texture on a surface.
A pipe cutter is a tool used by plumbers to cut pipe. Although pipe cutters are more limited to what they can cut, they leave a clean cut. There are two types of pipe cutters. One type is for thinner pipes and the other type for thicker pipes.
A paint brush is used to apply paint onto a surface, normally to a wall or wood. The handle tends to plastic or wood with bristles that are natural or synthetic
This tool is used for hollowing and cutting thin wood from a workpiece. This power tool is a spindle that is able to cut small because of its narrow blade and base plate. It's mainly used in woodworking like cabinetry.
A rip hammer has a straight claw, not curved. Generally used for framing and ripping construction, while a claw hammer is used for pulling out nails. The rip hammer is more flat and used to rip wood apart. It is heavier and used by most professionals.
A rip saw makes a cut in the direction of the wood grain. The teeth have a flat front edge and are aligned with 4-10 teeth per inch. It is useful for wood-cutting and making furniture.
A hack saw is a saw with fine teeth that is used mainly for cutting metal and it can also cut wood. This saw works by cutting up and down until the pipe is fully cut. The length is usually 10-12 inches and it is lightweight.
A hot glue gun is used in technical theater to glue whatever objects you need together. The gun heats up so you can spread hot glue over the area you are attaching something to. The trigger on the gun controls the amount of glue that comes out.
