G.I. JOE VS BARBIE
Gender Traits
Girl toys, such as Barbie, are typically characterized by nurturing and household duties, which are deemed as feminine and associated with females.

Boy toys, such as G.I. JOE, are associated with violence, action, or physical aggression and are deemed masculine and associated with males.
American Values
Barbie and GI Joe teach kids some core american values. Specifically, females in american society should play the domestic role and participate in household chores, taking care of children, and so on. Males should participate in more manly tasks and should support and protect the family. The GI Joe toy also displays the value America places on war, patritism, and good vs bad. Barbie symbolizes the American Dream of the "white picket fence" and a sort of perfect family and person.
History
G.I. Joe is a line of action figures produced by the toy company Hasbro. The development of G.I. Joe led to the coining of the term "action figure". G.I. Joe's appeal to children has made it an American icon among toys.

Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy-company Mattel, Inc. and launched in March 1959.Barbie is the figurehead of a brand of Mattel dolls and accessories, including other family members and collectible dolls. Barbie has been an important part of the toy fashion doll market for over fifty years, and has been the subject of numerous controversies and lawsuits, often involving parody of the doll and her lifestyle

Positive and Negative Impacts
Positive: Barbie teaches young children to take responsibility and to be independent from a young age. GI Joe influences kids to be strong, disciplined, and courageous.. like the action figure.
Negative: Both action figures set strict gender roles which can negatively impact the way children think of and see the world in their later adult life. Barbie, specifically, can make girls feel self concious for Barbie is made to be seemingly perfect.
Protest
Feminist protestors in Berlin are up in arms over the shallow materialism they argue the Barbie symbolizes. "They present an image of cooking, priming and singing, as if it were in some way life-fufilling," Socialist Alternative editor told a German newspaper.
Barbie has long been a subject of controversy -- with criticisms ranging from sexism to racism to creating body image issues for girls.
How same and mixed gender play happens
There are some Barbie characters, like Ken, whom boys can use to interact with the female Barbie characters. However, GI Joe is strictly male and so a female would have to assume a male role.
Lasting Impact
These toys teach children from a young age about gender roles and how each sex should act and look. This can negatively impact these children in later years for it will be different for them to be accepting of certain things later in life. (a woman in the army, a stay at home dad, etc)
