Transcript of Initial Contact: Meeting your mentee

Meeting your mentee The Initial Contact Introduce yourself the first contact you will have with your mentee is an introductory email where you will explain who you are
start off by mentioning that you are a mentor with the New York City Service Initiative and you have been assigned to be their mentor
introduce yourself: name, major, hometown, hobbies
include information about what you did in highschool so they can relate to you better
mention the services that you can offer as a mentor Introduce Yourself... ASK QUESTIONS!
Tell me about yourself, what are you involved in in school, what current grade are you in, what tv shows do you watch
You want to keep the conversation going and by asking questions they feel more obligated to respond What to do if your mentee doesn't respond tell an eboard member
if it's been a few weeks send them another email and ask them if there is a better way to communicate them EXAMPLE First Email My name is Tina and I'm one of the mentors with the New York City Service Initiative! We recently partnered with you school in a mentorship program where students from Cornell University serve as mentors for students in your school! I am your mentor!! I'm am here to answer any and all questions you may have about graduating high school, going to college or basically anything you need mentoring in! I'll just tell you a little bit about myself. I grew up in the South Bronx and went to Cardinal Spellman High School. I am now a sophomore at Cornell. I am premed and also a psychology major. Besides being involved in NYCSI, I am a member of a sorority here on campus! I also watch way too many TV shows that I could not possibly list all in one email - but some of my favs include The Vampire Diaries, Revenge, Pretty Little Liars, Skins, and (recently) Breaking Bad. I would love to hear about you! What are some interests or hobbies of yours? What subjects do you like in school?
