To group or not to group?
Imagine you are recording ages of people in a supermarket.

Why would you not want to group this data?

What would the problems be leaving it as raw data?

How could you represent the data to solve these problems?
L.O. - Understand data represented in a stem and leaf diagram and find the median and inter-quartile range from a stem and leaf diagram.
Start on the left, work your way across doing the calculations in your head, and write down the answer.

To group or not to group?
Imagine you are recording ages of people in a supermarket.

Why would you not want to group this data?
Buying patterns may be very different even within likely age groups.
What would the problems be leaving it as raw data?
Very hard to analyse and spot patterns/find averages if large amount of data collected.
How could you represent the data to solve these problems?
Find a way of grouping data that then also allows you to see individual values.

Ordered Stem and Leaf Diagram

What stem would you use for this data?

a) 132, 143, 135, 154, 137, 149, 128, 136, 141, 150

b) 7.8, 8.6, 9.3, 7.4, 7.8, 8.8, 10.2, 9.4, 7.1, 8.0

Put this data into an ordered stem and leaf diagram.

Can you find the median and range from the stem and leaf diagram?
