Who is Arnold Gesell?
Born in Alma, Wisconsin in 1880
Eldest of five children and son of a photographer and teacher
Studied at Wisconsin University to become a teacher and worked at an elementary school after graduating
Gesell received his PhD at Clark University for Psychology
Assistant prof. at Yale while studying medicine and received MD.
Developed Clinic of Child Development
Gesell's Maturational Theory
Believed that child
development
and
maturation
is fundamentally
biological
Children are born with the genetics which
predetermine
ones developmental patterns and
rate
of
maturation
All outside factors such as learning and experiences are
inferior

Gesell Developmental Schedules
Believed growth happens in
