Period 7 The Grapes of Wrath Q: What is the effect of the intercalary chapters that are interspersed within the narrative about the Joads (chapters 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29)? How would the elimination of those chapters affect the meaning and the impact of the novel? Write an essay in which you explain the purpose of these chapters. STEP In order to properly understand the prompt, first it must be deconstructed and analyzed. This prompt asks us to discover why the intercalary chapters are so important, the effect of the way the chapters are interspersed between the Joad's story, and how the story would fuction without it. 2 To answer this question the one must understand the function of these chapters.
The intercalary chapters are used to provide social and historical context, and give a point of view other than that of the Joads. STEP A thesis is a major part of any essay because it contains the main arguement for your writing. Here, one must argue how the intercalary chapters function in our story, and what would happen if they were removed. 4 And that concludes this prezi! c: THE END Steinbeck uses perspectives outside of the Joad's in order to provide social and historical context and commentary during this period. This explains this story's setting. The intercalary chapters provide insight to the world surrouding the Joads, and without them, we would be left with a less developed story. When writing an essay, it is important to remember to maintain the ebb and flow of it. Also be sure to address all of the points mentioned in the thesis.
