She helped open doors for future artist like Queen Latifah and Missy Elliot. Erick B. and Rakim dropped "Follow the Leader" in 1998 (their debut album a year earlier "Paid in Full" changed the game.) eric B.'s Soul and jazz influenced production was a very important alternative hip-hop and jazz-rap style that would emerge in the early 90's, and Rakim is known as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time. Gangsta Rapper, producer, actor, businessman, Eazy-E's solo album "Eazy Duz It" bolted him to immediate superstar status. Eazy and Jerry Heller set up the Ruthless Records label, signing Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. Together the formed N.W.A. (they released "straight Outta Compton" within a month of this) "straight Outta Compton" is the debut album by N.W.A. The members were: Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, DJ Yellow, and Arabian Prince. This album was viewed as the pioneering record of gangsta rap and helped give birth to a new sub-genre of HIP-HOP. To many present-day listeners, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince are best remembered for launching the superstar music/acting career of the latter, now known by his real name of Will Smith. The Philly duo's second album played a major role in making rap music accessible to pop audiences and young listeners. RUN-DMC and Jam Master Jay, the most influential group in HIP-HOP history dropped their 4th album "Tougher than Leather". They were credited with breaking HIP-HOP into mainstream music and inspired a whole generation to pick up a pen and a pad. Slick Rick epitomized the 'pimp' attitude of many mc's during the late 80's and early 90's, with gold chains, his trademark eye-patch and smoothed-out lyrics. The legendary storyteller of RAP realeased his debut album "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick." "By All Means Necessary", the second album from Boogie Down Productions. BDP was one of the formative bands of both hardcore and political HIP-HOP, led by rapper KRS-ONE. With the release of their second album "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back"Public Enemy were arguably the first political rap group and one of the most influentiial HIP-HOP groups ever. Laying the foundation for conscious rap and criticised the institutional racism that white America didn't see. "Straight out the Jungle" is the debut album from the Jungle Brothers. This marked the beginning of the Native Tongues Collective (Socially-conscious, positive, Afrocentric lyrics and jazzy beats), later featuring popular artists like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Black Sheep. Among the first groups to tame raps hardcore mentality into music for the massess. Kid 'N' Play debuted with their platinum almbum "2 Hype". The former Salt 'N' Pepa back up dancers spawned the feature 'House Party'. By the late 80's HIP-HOP was on its way to becoming a male dominated art form, which is what made the emergence of Salt N' Pepa so significant. As the first all-female rap crew, the drop of their sophomore album helped brake down doors for women in HIP-HOP. Biz Markie's humorous and goofy style camouflaged his true talents as a freestyle rapper. HIs debut album "Goin Off' with his tuneless, half-sung choruses, and sampled productions proved that HIP_HOP could be funny and melodic. Big Daddy Kane's 1988 debut "Long Live the Kane" still stands as a raw classic. The smoothed-out new jack playa would be one of HIP-HOP's supreme lyrical rulers. EPMD's (Erick and Parish Making Dollars) 1988 debut classic, "strictly Business" was recorded during the clearance-free sampling heday. The New York duo were known as one of the most important acts in East Coast HIP-HoP. LL Cool J. has had possibly the longest career of any other HIP-HOP artist, having released 12 albums over 23 active years. He also had a hand in starting the successful clothing line FUBU, and has appeared in fils and on TV, most notably in the NBC sitcom In the House.
