Digital literacies What is Digital Literacy Digital literacy is used to describe the literacy practices of students that use newly developed tools such as the Internet, digital music players, digital video , still cameras, and video games. 1) Multimodal-texts are formed from linguistic, aural,visual, and kinesthetic elements.
2)Networked and collaborative-adolescents learn new technologies by consulting with each other or by trial and error rather than going thru detailed tutorials or asking an expert.
3)Simultaneous-learner use several new technologies at the same time.Therefore engaging in new literacies on top of one another by stacking open windows.
4)New-students can learn new things with reading and writing online which is different than the older media such as pencil and paper. Technologies and digital literacy practices are integral to understanding literacy.
1) New technologies are changing the way we read, create,acquire,communicate, send information and view the World.
2) The technology is pervasive in student lives and they need to develope critical ability and be digital literact to evaluate their thinking about the effects of technology on their lives. Most of the new literacies involve the media being asynchronous,or synchronous with the communication partners.
Definition of key terms.
Synchronous means the communication partner is communicating simultaneously with other partner such as instant messaging.
Asynchronous is not simultaneous such as e-mail. Facebook is the most popular social networking site and nearly 50% of teens visit the site, daily!!! Content creation is now about incorporating video,audio and hyperlinks on a web page rather just writing on a paper with a pen.Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia that can be updated by shared content.Wiki is shorthand for any site for users to add or change content. The first gaming console was made in 1972.Pong was the first video game which started the video game revolution,Halo 2 is a prime example of the popular of video games exspecially first person shooter games. This video game sales exceed $125 million dollars on it premiere day! Web 1.0 is a term representing the way the World Wide Web was used before 1995.It was used to seek and gather information. In addition, e-mail was and still today popular as a medium for communication.It is driving down the mail volume because Americans are increasing their use of online communications.The postal service has been losing billions of dollars each year and the postmaster general plan to start a new approach for delivery to respond to the changing digital technologies. Today,people's time online are much more complex.It is not just about e-mail and gathering information.The current World Wide Web,Web 2.0 is about creating something such as a web page, blog, personal profile, video or audio file and it marked a shift in the ways that information is posted and accessed through site based on the open and shared content of Wikipedia. School-based literacy practices should not be behind digital literacy and technology practices. We can teach students to use the new literacy and approach it with a critical eye and a wide variety of digital tools such as e-mail,instant messaging,webpages, video gaming and video or audio share filing. .
