By: Kate DiCamillo Because of Winn-Dixie Main Characters Opal Opal is a nice girl with lots of friends! But when she moves to Naomi, she must leave everything behind and is lonely. On a trip to the store, Opal finds a shaggy, homeless dog. The dog's fate was the pound and she just had to keep him! Opal reconnects with her dad and learns about her mom. She finds many new friends and learns how to love unconditionally. Main Characters Winn-Dixie A dog that is one-of-a-kind and has the unique ability to smile! Opal finds him in the store and the angry clerk is going to
call the pound. Lying, she tells the clerk that it is her dog. Opal adopts him and loves Winn-Dixie with all her heart. With him, they meet many new friends! Main Characters The Preacher After his wife leaves, The Preacher is a sad man who is closed like a book. Opal wants to learn about her mother and be closer to her dad.
Winn-Dixie helps The Preacher to talk to Opal.
The Preacher then realizes that he is super lucky to have his daughter and regains strength and happiness. Setting The story takes place in Naomi, where Opal and her father move to in the beginning of the story. Opal meets many new friends in and around the town. Some places she visits are the library, Gertrude's Pets, the church, and Gloria Dump's house. Opal also meets lots of friends... Gloria Dump: She is a great friend
that teaches Opal many life lessons. Dewberry Twins: Annoy Opal and
call Gloria Dump a witch. Opal
becomes friends with them in the end because they were trying to
be friendly all along. Friends Miss Franny Block: The librarian
in Naomi. She tells Opal stories and they become great friends. Otis: A nice man that Opal
meets in the pet store. Otis takes care of the pets and Opal learns something strange. He was thrown in jail for hitting
a policeman. The policeman told him not to play his guitar in the streets, but he gets angry. Otis is sorry for hitting him and is a really great man -and friend. Friends Amanda Wilkinson: A girl who is unhappy and her face looks like she just swallowed a lemon. Opal doesn't like her, but soon finds out that Amanda's brother drowned a year ago. Amanda is happy at the end of the story and is surrounded by friends. Friends Sweetie Pie: A little girl that
LOVES dogs! She is five years
old and invites Opal to her party. Together, they become good friends. PLOT Opal comes to Naomi with her daddy. She is lonely and wants some friends. Opal's daddy, The Preacher, has been sad and upset ever since his wife left him. When Opal finds Winn-Dixie, things start to change. Opal meets many new friends and her daddy realizes how lucky he is. I rate this book 4.5 out of five stars. This is a really great book! You can feel everything that the characters are feeling. It is as if you are
part of the story and always want things to turn out for Opal. The author is very descriptive and it makes
her writing colourful and fun. I did not like the book in the fact that it is fairly sad, but I guess there are many sad things in the world. That is what I rate this
book.
